RE: Indiana Report
Where ya at Kardkutter?
Nice buck, congrats! |
RE: Indiana Report
Thanks guys..and yes..my buck's neck was fat! He must have really been working rubs..and doing his share of sparring. He did have wood shavings all over the top of his head and around the base of his anters.
BHG...aren't you around Ft. Wayne...or close to it? I'm from Decatur..just south of you about 20 minutes. My buddy and I gave up on hunting Adams Co..and we go up to LaGrange. We hunt the quad-county area (LaGrange-Stueben-Noble-Dekalb). Deer are just everywhere up there. |
RE: Indiana Report
Yeah, I'm in Ft. Wayne, I know exactly where Decatur is, been there a few times. I wouldn't mind hunting Dekalb as there aren't many hunters in Dekalb compared to other counties. I'd LOVE to get an urban area in Allen though, there are a ton of nice sized bucks in urban zones, it's just getting the permission that sucks!
You know where Pro Bowl West is on Goshen Rd in Fort Wayne? There is a creek that runs behind that plaza there, also a nice sized area of brush and trees, last year we saw a NICE rack in that brushy area, we wanted to get permission to hunt it, but aren't sure where to go or who to talk to. Where do you hunt in Noble County? Actually, I am originally from Dekalb county, Auburn actually, where do you hunt in Dekalb? |
RE: Indiana Report
Oh..sorry for the misunderstanding...but I hunt a large piece of land in LaGrange that actually boarders those counties...it's the quad-county corner. I also hunt land north of that..right by "Big Long Lake."
BTW..you're not missing anything of much importance in regards to you few visits to Decatur...pretty boring around here. And Goshen Rd...I'm not familiar with that road all to well..are you talking about somewhere close to where SR 14 intersects it? |
RE: Indiana Report
no, 14 intersects it way past where I was referring to, you do know where Coliseum blvd is, right? It's um... er... south east of that, about a mile or so from Coliseum Blvd. If you take exit 109a (hwy 30), it brings you right to Coliseum, you just go straight on Hwy 30 (Goshen Rd) and you would drive right past it. Actually, it's right down by WBTU's 93.3's office.... But most people don't know where that is (and the only reason I do is because I applied for a job there last year) LOL It's not far from Coliseum though.
Lagrange continually produces big ones though, my exhusband is from around that area, so I have been up there a few times, but it's mostly Amish or Hispanic population up there! LOL I don't get North very often, the furthest I go is Garrett/Auburn because that is where my family is. |
RE: Indiana Report
Buck Hunting Girl, I'm from Evansville, IN. South west Indiana. I hunt Vanderburgh county. The whole county is an urban deer zone. I started bow hunting Sept. 15. Lucky Me.
I took and cut off the antlers and keep the antlers in the garage. After 4 days magots started eating on the flesh. So I put it out side to let them eat. 5 days later my rack is gone!!!! Something took it. O well I guess I'll wait till next year to get another one. KK |
RE: Indiana Report
That's too bad, KK. I put salt on the skull...and then boil it to get the membrane and what-not off. After a few days...good as new!
|
RE: Indiana Report
Thanks Pat, I'll try that next time. The first buck I got I cut the antlers off and put the skull part in bleach, well it bleached the bottom part of the antlers too. So I bleached the whole antlers. It doesn't look too bad, I just prefer the as is color of the antlers. I bet boiling doesn't hurt the color.

RE: Indiana Report
Boiling does't affect the antlers at all. I boil them for a while...pull them out..take a pair of pliers and pull the hair and skin off...then a pocket knife to get the thin layer of membrane off the skull. For some reason, some have smelled bad for a couple days..others are oderless from the moment they come out of the water.

RE: Indiana Report
Hi my name is Joey I'm 16 and this was my first year hunting. I hunt here in Bloomington right by the causeway. On opening day i counted 68 shot from right when it was getting light out side till the sun was just hitting me in the face in my tree stand.
I was sitting up there for a while, probably around 9 or 9:30 I was like there aren't going to be any deer come by here so i was looking around and then i looked right behind me and there was a spike. I turned and shot it dropped it right there. I was shaking so bad it was crazy. I know it was just a spike but hey it was the first i had a chance at so i had to shoot it. My step dad and his son was back in the woods to they didn't see anything besides cyoties. The good thing about that spike was that they tagged it as a doe so i could still get a buck! Well it was the following Monday of opening Muzzle loader, I was just heading in the woods behind my house and i was walking through this little field when I thought I would stop and see if anything was in there. I was looking around didn't see anything but I could hear something scrapping the ground, I looked down by where I heard the sound and i seen a deer I thought it was a doe so I got my Binoculars out and i seen one antler couldn't see anymore from all the tall grass so i just hoped it was a big buck it had a big body so I shot. Now the deer was kinda facing towards me so the best shot i had was the shoulder couldn't get behind it. You know how it is when you first start hunting you don't wait you just shot it, well thats how I was anyways, well anyways I shot, the smoke cleared the deer was running away from me then all of a sudden he turns around running right towards to I stand really still he gets closer I mean like 20ft so I start running backwards then he cuts off to the left of me running towards the house. I thought he was an 8 or 10 pointer. So I reload breaking the ramrod cause I so shaky I radio'd back home and told em' about it, went to look for blood well i didn't see any blood. The longer I stood the more mad I got so I said screw I was just going to go home. Well about 30 to 35 yards from the field right at the top off the trail there was dead so I stopped I didn't walk up to him I just counted the points, he was an 8 pointer so hurried back home we got the truck and went back and got him. I've got pictures but I don't have them developed yet I'll put them on here when I get them. So now I'm saving to get him mounted. The only bad thing about him was he wasn't ruttin yet but oh well my first Buck! So now i can't wait till next years gun season I'll be out there!!:) |
