Carpmaster, Iwould go with the 300mag, Just to make sure you get adequate penetration.
I have alsways used my old win. lever action 22 with a $5.00 tasco scope on top.deadly.

I'm addicted to using a .22 with a scope and head shots. I use several .22's for my hunting; CPA with 6X Unertl small game scope, Kimber, Win 85, Win 52 sporters, Rem 581L Use Wolf Match/extra ammo or Rem subsonic HP.
