Iowa Pheasant

i live in northwest iowa.. and the numbers are the highest in the state around here. this time of the year concentrate on hunting groves around houses, or brushy areas with trees. there'll also be birds in crp, and after a good snowfall they'll hold really tight. this time of the year most of the public land is hunted out.... the way to go is on private. yesterday we went out and got 7 roosters between 3 guys in a couple hours. 3 were killed in a grove, and 4 were killed in small patches of grass and crp with corn on both sides... hunt slowly and thoroughly because the birds are under the grass and the snow drifts. a good dog is a must otherwise you're gonna walk right by 75% of them.

Don't waste your time in SE part of the state...I hunted last weekend around Iowa City and the Kalona area...LOW numbers...Didn't hardly see any birds...killed 5 in two days with 2 guns in the group..

I lived on the red Rock Lake and there are tons of pheasant. I would see 100 birds a night some time setting in my tree stand. Only one problem, big brushy river bottoms and hard to get up because they run so bad and no place to drive them to get them up. Can run for miles.

Hunted up around Red Rock Lake Friday. Hunted on the North East side, just North of Pella. No Birds....IA is short on birds this year!! Go a report from a farmer that Hamilton Co. was still good but didn't want to travel that far North.
