I'm way behind schedule this year. We have a 4yr old, 2yr old, and a newborn (no sleep in our house) so I have been very busy with the family, i.e not much scouting or shooting. The mosquito's are worse here by Lafayette than they have been all year, hopefully some of this cold weather coming in will help.

I did some scouting down in southern IN this weekend on some of the public lands. There was a LOT of movement! Ironically we saw some moving right THROUGH the archery range in the park.

If it stays cool like this, we might have a good year. Last year sucked!

I'm taking opening week off, so hopefully, I'll get something to come in.

The cool off has sure helped. I was able to get some more things done this weekend and didnt have to spray down with off. Got some paths mowed down and some distant scouting. they got a couple paths really beat down and its only going to get better.

I have been getting about 1600 trial cam. pictures a week off of 4 cameras in Jefferson Co. I have 40 different bucks on Sd cards so far. EHD has me a little worried. THey found 10 dead by Big Oaks 2 dead buck on Splinters Ridge and aseveral others scattered through Jefferson and Switzerland Co.. ONe guy by the Rufuge in Seymour found 16 dead does last week. The Refuge is really getting hit hard, too.

Any one taking advantage of using a rifle this year? I am currently trying to decide if I should get a rifle or not. If you are going to be using one, what will you be using?

im not ckiel. im planning on using my bow most of the season. I may use my hawken or black diamond to expand my doe harvest on a couple farms that have a severe doe population.

I'm way down here in Harrison Co., been seeing more deer than last year, and while it could be my imagination I'd swear that the does down here are the size of cows. I've been seeing some buck sized does left and right lately.

We got a weird buck on a trail-cam from our land in LaGrange County. It's right side had 4 really good points. His left side comes up out of his head about 6"..then hooks a near 90º angle to the right..crossing over the top of his right side antlers. I hope I can get some pics from my digital of him...it's neat!

Yeah I'm goning to take advantage of it. I have a H&R Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W. I'll be using that and my inline this year.

More bad news. THey report tohave found over 100 dead deer in the Refuge here in Seymour. There have been others guys reporting finding them just outside the Refuge.

No rifle/hungun load for me either. The T/C Omega seems to do the trick out to 200 yards. Any news on what the cause of the dead deer is from?

Probably Blue Tongue, it's bad this year.

How does that .500 shoot? If I get into the rifle hunting this would be my choice. What kind of range and groups you getting. I have a Handi in a .17HMR and it is a tack driver. I aslo have a H&R Ultra Slugger in 20 gaugeI use for gun hunting and it will shoot 1 hole groups at 50 yards with Lightfields .

I have hunted Splinters Ridge since it opened and have never seen or heard about the archery range? There is one at Crosley.

I work at a gun shop in Kokomo and have sold quite a few .500 Handi rifles....I say use the 20ga!! Most guys arent getting the groups they want and it kicks like a mule!! You can get about 150 yards with the Hornady 300grn sst bullets but your 20ga will do the same. You may want to look into Hastings slugs for it. I had one and shot lightfields also and it was a tack driver!! Dont waste your money unless you just want something new!

I shoot Lightfields in my 12ga, but rarely use it anymore. Now it's my muzzleloader during firearm season.

Bachelor groups starting to break up in West Central Indiana. I saw some sparring going on this week-end. As the corn starts coming out the season will only get better. We took a kid out for the "youth hunt" this weekend, and from whatwe saw the deer are still in the summer pattern. Come on cool weather.

Primitive Weapon 10-02-2007 10:29 PM

RE: INDIANA hunters

I hunted public land both Monday and Tuesday morning. Saw 13 (12 doe's - 1 small 6pt buck) on Monday, nothing Tuesday. I wasn't interested in the small buck since we only get ONE for the year. I'll hold out for something bigger.

I would have taken a doe but the ones the came close enough for bow range were small. Drew on a pair of does a couple times just for practice, none of them winded or spotted movement. Monday was a fun day.

Pat Curtis 10-03-2007 01:46 PM

RE: INDIANA hunters

I checked my camera yesterday. Bunch of does with fawns (some had spots still). One 4pt, and one HUGE raccoon.

I'll be out Fri/Sat/Sun.

RE: INDIANA hunters

Upper 80's this weekend?! Pssh....I'll be golfing. [>:] Average highs are nearly 20º below the expected high. At least this should give area farmers a good chance to get the rest of their beans out, and possibly start on the corn.

Pat Curtis 10-07-2007 06:46 AM

RE: INDIANA hunters

Thought about going out this morning, but WeatherBug said 65º @ 530am, thus I stayed home. My buddy went out yesterday morning, got dominated by mosquito's. I used to tough it out..and have killed several deer in these temps, but at 25 years of age, this guy has gotten wiser. This is only the beginning of the year, MUCH time left..not to mention my 2 weeks off starting November 5th. :D

After we get past the possible record highs today and tomorrow, the rest of the week looks much cooler.

The farmer out at the place i hunt took his corn down yesterday. Can not believe it, it's usually early November at the earliest before he gets it out. Got me a new bow this year so im anxious to start hunting. I'm working 2nd shift now so the weekends look like my only time to hunt, and im going to have to refuse the voluntary overtime every weekend in order to get that time free.
