RE: INDIANA hunters

It was a little slow this weekend compared to last year. I saw 65 total on Fri, Sat and Sunday. 20 different bucks. No shooters. Last night I had 7, 8 pointers come in one after another. And YES I did take pictures so if you want to see them let me know I would be happy to share.

You don't need to do it again, she'll probably do the same all over. Thanks though. [>:]

Thanks for the email, Parrot.

The farmer had ½ of his bean field off when we got there in the afternoon, then it took him the last part of the day to get the rest of the field combined. I saw 4 deer, closest being 40 yards..and nothing to shoot. My buddy had 2 deer right under his stand, but they were small.

Time to hit the woods!

RE: INDIANA hunters

Sat. morning I saw 3 does. Sat evening I saw 31. I had 21 in the field at the same time. The most I could get in one picture at a time was 9. 3 bucks. One decent 10 pointer. Sun. a.m. nothing . Sunday evening 14. 6 bucks. The 10 pointer again and them what looked to be a shooter. And yes I have pictures e-mail me if you want to see them.

Thanks

After seeing does the last couple of hunts I decided to take a nice one for the food back last night. Was able to call her to me twice with the fawn bleat and then let the muzzy find the mark.

Im going to go this weekend for the first time this year. Weather is looking kind of crappy, but i cant be picky this year, weekends are all i get. Last weekend i was at my local bow shop where my little cousin works shooting some arrows and there were 3 deer brought in to be checked in. 2 little bucks and a doe. One place i hunt, the corn is completely gone. The other place still has standing corn but my uncle seen 12 does and a 6 pointer from my stand Sunday night.

RE: INDIANA hunters

Are you guys down south seeing a lot of twins this year? I hunt Mississinewa and they are all over. I've only seen 2 does with a single fawn.

Since the season opened, the deer have gotten more spooky, at Miss anyway. I've seen several does and one little 6. Hopefully the next hunter will let him pass, too.

COME ON COLD WEATHER!

I seriously need to find a lease.

Any of you hunt Muscatatuck? I've been drawn for the 3rd and was hoping to get some suggestions on areas to look at. Thanks.

Hopefully these evil storms move on by tomorrow afternoon. I'd like to go out and hunt a new stand...

RE: INDIANA hunters

Went this morning and this evening and saw the same set of does both times. 3 of em. Drew back on the biggest one tonight but never did have a good shot. Needs to cool down and hopefully next weekend the bucks start moving a little more.

RE: INDIANA hunters

It's been slow early for us, but around 430pm the deer movement REALLY picks up. The last 2 afternoons have been great...TONS of deer. Only problem is, the bigger deer don't come close enough. Fawns and yearlings pretty much hang around wherever I go, which is cool to watch.

On a side note, I was stretching in my stand, and took a deep breath...when I sucked in a bug. I can still feel it in my chest. I've coughed so hard and so much, I'm about the vomit. Not fun, but I'll deal with it. lol

It shoots really nice for such an inexpensive gun. I have it sighted in at 100yds. I kept my groups within the size of a fist at 150yds. So I have to say I am happy with it.

How does that .500 shoot? If I get into the rifle hunting this would be my choice. What kind of range and groups you getting. I have a Handi in a .17HMR and it is a tack driver. I aslo have a H&R Ultra Slugger in 20 gaugeI use for gun hunting and it will shoot 1 hole groups at 50 yards with Lightfields .

Any one taking advantage of using a rifle this year? I am currently trying to decide if I should get a rifle or not. If you are going to be using one, what will you be using?
Yeah I'm goning to take advantage of it. I have a H&R Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W. I'll be using that and my inline this year.

The past couple of times I've been out, I haven't seen anything. I'm sure the deer are on a different schedule/pattern now.

This heat truly is not helping matters. [:'(]

Sat. a.m I saw 5 bucks. 3 were together. Sat. pm. I had 14 at one time in the alfalfa. I got 9 in the picture. I then snuck over to look at another field it had 2 does and probably the biggest buck I have ever seen while hunting. Tired to take a picture but he was 150 yards away. Sunday a.m. 3 does. Sunday evening 17. I got 12 in one picture. I am seeing bucks still together and not really interested in does yet. Hopefully it will pick up soon.

I was at splinter ridge saturday morning and saw 2 doe's and a small 6pt. Had the 6pt at 16yds. He was watching one of the doe's. He was a young guy, probably 1½ year old. He was certainly a good looking deer and will probably have some good potential. Very uniform, looked to be in great shape.

I had a chance on a good doe at 25yds but I thought she was going to keep feeding closer to me so I waited. She turned and started feeding away from me and never offered another shot. That's how it goes sometimes.

The 6pt wondered off to about 80yds from me and bedded down and watched a doe as she was feeding, once she wondered out of sight, he got up and walked off in the other direction.

How many guys were signed in at Splinters. I use to hunt that place all the time. I still do sometimes just for a different look. I know a couple of guys that found several dead ones in there before the season.

I have heard stories as well but haven't seen any dead deer yet. Where else do you hunt? Been to seymour much or just the other public land in southern indiana? (can't remember it's name)

I own a little over 200 acres on 2 different farms outside Seymour and one in Jennings Co. I hunt them during the week. On the weekend I hunt Jefferson/Switzerland/Dearborn Counties. Once the Refuge opens to everyone I hunt there everyday.

Is it the Hoosier Forest.

Parrot Head 10-23-2007 05:47 AM

RE: INDIANA hunters

I know you hunt Splinters a lot. There is a prime piece of hunting land for sale down there. 91 acres 2500 per acre. The number 9 buck in the state was killed out of there and 4 bucks over 150 each. I went and looked at it but it doesnt have a building site. Let me know I can get you the owners number I talked with him before season.

I was picking up a couple of does I shot from the processor and I ran into Landin Turner who played at IU and is in the wheel chair. He is a big time hunter and bought 2-300 acres over by Cannan.

Went out yesterday morning and had a decent 8 point chasing 3 does hard. They all had their mouths open and were breathing hard as if they had been run around for awhile. I watched that buck chase and trail them for some time, even had him at about 25 yards, but he needs another couple years to grow. The next 2 weeks are my favorite time to be in my stand.

RE: INDIANA hunters

Been a crappy weekend so far. Started off on friday afternoon, me and the wife had to put our family dog to sleep. Totally unexpected, he was only 5 years old. Thought i would get out on Saturday and try to get my mind off that, woke up to howling winds and pouring rain saturday morning so i said forget it. Finally got out yesterday afternoon and had the neighboring landowner and his grandson decide they wanted to come stroll the property line and hunt squirrels around 6pm. So i got to listen to the sound of a 4-10 go off every 10 minutes and listen to them BS back and forth at the top of their lungs.

Got up and went out this morning. Absolutely perfect weather conditions. Seen 2 bucks, still together, try a little sparring around 9 am. Both were dinks and it was funny watching them try to fight. All the sudden, they take off, snorting, the whole bit. WTF? I turn around and it's the same 2 visitors from yesterday evening, 4-10 in hand, scaring deer everywhere. Decided i had enough of that crap for this weekend, got down and left, going to watch the Colts this afternoon and take it easy this evening. Hopefully next weekend is a little better, it should be.

Should be prime time to be in the woods in the next coupl of days? Take your lunch and sit as long as you can.....

Well i decided to give it a go tonight afterall at my other property with my uncle. That spot never dissapoints me, i had deer everywhere around dark, mostly does. Seen 2 bucks, a 4 pointer and another bigger buck but not sure on points. The bigger one busted out of a thicket and chased the 4 pointer off, the 4 point was on the tail of a doe. It's about that time. Suppose to be at least 2 nice 10 pointers out there this year. My uncle seen one of em last evening, his buddy had one at 50 yards Thursday night.
