Shot a buck this morning. He's an old sucker, only had a few teeth left and was really grey on the face. It's a 4 pointer, with 5 points broke off.

Got to my treestand @ 6am, a good hour before legal shooting time. Had deer all around me feeding in a corn field, and making their way to a water hole. About 730am, a group of 8 does, plus 1 small buck cut into a woods right behind me, then come out behind me to my right. I aimed at a large doe, pulled the trigger..and "POP" is all I heard..no BANG. I use a muzzleloader during Firearm Season..my powder must have gotten wet from hunting the other day.

So I wasfreakin' pissed, got down..walked ½ mile to my truck..cleaned the barrel out...reloaded...then walked back the my treestand again. Sat there pissed off for about 15 minutes, then saw 3 does being chased by 2 bucks. They came directly to me. The does started feeding below me, and the bucks came right up to them..smelled the estrous I sprayed everywhere..then this guy put his nose on one of the does. I drilled him in the shoulder (quartering to my 4 o'clock), fell 30 yards later. I should have taken a pic of his heart..it was dominated by the 270gr Powerbelt.

Anywho, dressed out @ 173lbs. Should be a 9 point, but the G1's and G2's are broken off, and a drop tine was missing too. He has a funky shaped rack since he was an older deer. My father in-law saw this deer during bow season with all of his tines, just couldn't get a shot at him.

that is funky, but very unique. I did a mid day hunt today only had 1 doe come in and bed down about 100 yards out. Gonna go back out tomorrow afternoon and then sunday Iam going into my grandparents old woods. havent hunted it in 6 or 7 years usually some nice bucks hide in there. I dont have a stand anymore in there so will just sit on the ground near a tree and see if I get lucky.

Good luck to those of you still hunting.

He certainly looks like an older mature deer. How old do you figure he was? 6½?

The butcher figured 5½ or 6½ based on his teeth. I just glanced at them, and they were worn half way to the gums..looked nasty though. This is by far the oldest deer I've ever shot.

I shot a 168lbs doe 2 years ago, but didn't bother checking her age. But she was pretty grey throughout her body...so I would guess she was fairly old too.

Old deer is what you get when most of the hunters around you are duck hunters, and weekend warriors only.

What's the story behind it? Was it one of those times where you shoot one, then the rest just look at you? We get that all the time..sometimes they watch me climb all the way down out of the tree before they run off. lol
