RE: new to kansas
Blackmax2 - are you military? If so your best bet is on the Fort. Back when I was on it there were plenty of deer and almost no pressure. Back then no civilians were allowed to hunt on it. Of course things may have changed.
If you are looking for civilian hunting, you've got Perry lake which has about 5,000 acres of public hunting, of course it gets pretty good pressure. Go out right now before the forest turns green again and scout yourself out a good place a long ways from the nearest road. If you've hunted public in other states you know how it goes, have several spots lined up and don't be upset if someone is already there.
If you archery hunt, there is the archery only Turkey season for about a week before the regular one, April 1 I think it is, can't wait myself.
Good luck!
