Hi - I will be rifle hunting in area 16 in South Central Kansas in a couple of weeks on private, outfitted property. I will be the only rifle hunter for the first week and was wondering what kind of bucks I should expect to see. I know that there is creek bottom, feeders and wheat that has been planted and the property is managed well. I need some advice on what to hold out for. I know that that's a subjective question but what would an average tohigh end whitetail score in that area in your opinion? A trophy to me would score 160+ and am not sure if that is realistic or not. Thanks.

First of all, congrats on drawing a unit 16 tag.... Now,get ready for the experience of a lifetime! You're going to see plenty of nice bucks, but if you hold out for a 160 class, you just might go home empty handed. Don't get me wrong, that big boy might step out there at any time, but are you prepared to pass up a 150 class? I hunt north central Kansas every year, and just the possibility of seeing a world class buck is worth the trip! Best of luck to you.......

Thanks for your input guys. I'll be in and on the edge of the Gyp Hills and the guy has feeders and w. wheat fields along with good cover so here's hoping. Any other tips? Spot and stalk the best? Should they still be running right after thanksgiving? Much appreciated.

>>>> Here's wishing you a basket full of 160's,but despite our very upbeat friend, they are indeed hard to come by......Several of 160's(and better)get shot out there every year, but to claim that they are common place simply isn't so,and diminishes the effort.... Bucks have been chasing really hard for about a week now,and 90% of all the does will be bred by the end of the next4 or5 days. That said,I have hunted the rifle opener every year for last several years, and seem to always see a few bucks still chasing. Who knows! I like to get downwind of known bedding areas where good bucks have been spotted. Your outfitter will likely try to set you up to catch bucks moving to good food sources. Spot and stalk is a real possiblity, but if you don't come up with something you'd be interested in shooting, they do alot of pushing(drives) out there. I've taken by nicest bucks using this exciting method. Time's getting close..... best of luck to you........
