Hey all,
Big chunks of new york state that have been shotgun only for deer for decadeswere made rifle legal this last year.
In the months before the deer season there were many who predicted dismal outcomes. Rifle bullets wizzing by, hitting homes, increased hunter fatality, A mass slaughter of the deer herd, the end of the world as we know it etc.
In the end opening up the country to rifles didn't cause a huge upsurge in accidents, fatalites or complaints the deer take actually went down. I for one was glad for the change, I find the rifle to be a much more elegant tool.
If you wish to petition your state DNR for rifles I might research the statistics in NY and use that as evidence.

new to the site and this is my 1st post. But on the rifle topic I could go either way, honestly where I hunt a rifle wouldn't be that much help. But Ihave been in the northern part of the state were I could see it being helpful. I am not saying I wouldn't use a rifle if the legal opputunity came up. But I really can't see the big deal unless your hunting open fields where i'm sure a lot of people do in areas. like i said where i hunt (southeastern indiana) it's hilly a thick woods. and a lot of times you don't see deer until they are 20-30yds. But there are also a couple of my stands where i could see a deer coming in at a 150yds or so. I'm not against the rifle at all. I would just be more nervous about the guys on opening day that like to empty there gun then reload and shoot some more. and this is just my opinion so dont bash me to bad on my first post
