RE: coyte hunters in illinois

The only time I coyote hunt is when Im deer hunting and am not seeing anything and one of those buggers walk by. A couple years ago I made a great shot with my Slug gun at about 60 yards....Real nice looking coyote too, great fur and weighed around 60 lbs or so....
After carrying the coyote out of the area I was hunting I decided that I will probably never do that again since I have 2 Siberian Huskies and 1 Alaskan Malamute.....looked ALOT like one of them....

Oh, and by the way, I was told by quite a few people that lots of coyotes died this year as a result of a type of heart worm around here in central IL, and I havent seen one all season...

Here is why I cant shoot them anymore tho, notice the antler that one has in front of her.

I've taken 6 so far this year. Three of them I didn't call for, just saw them. The other three came into rabbit distress calls. 5 of them were yearlings, 1 was mature. I've been seeing quite a few since we got snow on the ground. Saw 3 the other day aound 1 in the afternoon running in the neighbors field. I'll start going out more in January. Always do better then. Good luck.

I've been dying to go out lately, especially since deer season. My uncle and have seen the same pack of 5 plus the same straggler during the second season. So....hopefully I'll be able to deer hunt during the day and 'yote hunt during the that I'll be able take a few.

while driven deer last durin 2nd season i had a yote run about 10ft behind me. it was a pretty yote they it was a light yellow in colour almost that of a yellow lab. then one of the other post shot a different one. i would have shot the one that went past me but by the time i new he was there it was to let to get turned around and put a bead on him.

Ive got 3 so far but ive only went 5 times so its started out pretty good. I used rabbit distress mostly. I will throw in a couple locator howls now and then but no luck. I shot 2 immature and one old'un. The old dog I'm getting tanned/mounted, I havn't decided. It had a great coat with a really stong red in it.

I would love to learn how to Coyte hunt. Anyone in Northeast Illinois or somewhat near there willing to school a wannabe? I can return the favorwith a goose hunt or dove huntnext year or fishing on a private lake for some awesome crappie, base and pike in the spring. I Went for a walk in my timber a couple of weeks ago and found a bunch of turkey feathers and an 8 inch beard, but no dead turkey.I figured a yote carried it away so I decided I better start coyote hunting.I never hunted them before and haven't had any success.I went out in the evening with a rabbit squealer.one day I blew a short series of calls, repeated about 45 min apart. The next time I blew longer series.Never saw anything.I have a howler, but havent used it much.I'm looking for any help and suggestions anyone may provide.
Thanks
Bill

primos makes desent distress calls. the setup is the MOST imprtant part of yote hunting. u dont need to be a god caller at all if you have the rightset up

Went 2 times no luck the first time and called a Bobcat within 15 yrds with a rabbit in distress the second. Pretty animals maybe one of these days will be able to shoot them in IL. I have seen over a dozen of them in the last 2 years.

I'm not sure where jacksonville is located or how far it is from me but I have no problem letting someone coyote hunt my 98 acres of timber.I am located just a couple of miles Northwest of Xenia.

I sent a PM to Il Ray Phillips, who lives in Flora, about 9 miles from me,inquiring if he would like to hunt yotes here.I haven't heard back from him yet.

It looks like I have to get these critters under control before I don't have any turkeys left.

Thanks Duckdog.
I retired here from Chicago about 8 years ago.It doesn't seem like many of the locals hunt coyotes, just shoot them at every oppurtunity, but it seems like that is not keeping them under control.I butcher my own deer but I have no idea how to skin out a coyote.Maybe I can find a site with good instructions. If you ever feel like taking a trip, stop by.

Il Ray,

You have been seeing that many bobcats around Flora? Wow. Have you consistently been seeing them over the years or is this something fairly new. I am from southeast of Olney. I remember one person accidentally catching one there in a trap over 20 years ago, but that was the last sighting I heard about. But then again, I have spent a lot of time in southwest Louisiana where they are thick, but have only seen a few over the years.

How do you make lonesome female howels and wimpers? What brand of calls do you use?

Duckdog:I don't know if you got my PMs

Ray:I just spent a bunch of bucks on some new equipment, call me,I think we can get a good setup with three guys.

RE: coyte hunters in illinois

RedneckBill,
Go to Cabelas.com, they sell Randy Andersons Predator hunting videos. These videos are very educational and fun to watch.
The lonely female howl is is about a medium pitched howl that last about 3-4 seconds, and the wimper sounds like the ki-yi or hurt dog yelp, except it is real short yelps.
My favorite calls are Dan Thompson calls, although I started out with Primos calls which are good calls.
I hope this helps, Good Luck!!

First thing I thought of while reading the story about the dead turkey is bobcat. I'd be willing to bet that a bobcat might be eating some of your birds. You might be hunting the wrong predator.

The coyote hunters were out in force this past weekend in Richland county running them with dogs. They started on the Richland/Lawrence county line and ended up about 6 miles into Richland county. They came near my property while I was hanging out in my deer stand, so i could hear the dogs. It was music to my ears. I went out to the road and chatted with one of the hunters. He claimed that they had seen about 30 coyotes over the course of the day.

duckdog132 02-02-2006 10:36 AM

RE: coyte hunters in illinois

30 coyotes..lol that seems a little rich but who knows. do you have dogs to run lance. its a blast running our dogs on them but iuse a poop ton of fuel. we went out last weekend also in scott county and killed ten but i am still hoping for some snow. thats when it really get good for the dogs.who all runs over your way?

Lanse couche couche 02-02-2006 11:19 AM

RE: coyte hunters in illinois

Yeah, i thought that 30 was a little high. But, he insisted that they had jumped a couple of packs of them in addition tothe onesthatthe dogs chased throughout the day. But then again, one of my parents neighbors has trapped at least 6 coyotes thus far on their small farm across the road. So,the area is infested with them.

I don't have any dogs. These folks were from Noble which is about 15 miles west of me. According to the guy I met, they hunt all over a couple of counties in the general area. I wouldn't mind hooking up with them, but nowadays, so much land is posted and so many folks are uptight about even a dog chasing a coyote across their back 40 that I have been reluctant to get involved with it.

duckdog132 02-02-2006 12:51 PM

RE: coyte hunters in illinois

yeah but they but the land owners cant do anything if the dog is on their land as long as the people stay off. but i still try to recpect the landowners wishes. the problem is those coyote go in all directions so its hard to tell if they will go on someone elses land or not. we ran on public ground a couple months ago and had a guy shoot one of our dogs. he was brought up on charges and had to dish out 900 dollars for the dog.
