RE: Indiana Hunters
By the way, congrats to you, Pat! I forgot to add that in my last post...
I have been a Sox fan for as long as I can remember, I'm pumped for this series! Hopefully the rain will hold off long enough for me to utilize my 1/2 day off work tomorrow... think I may go buy some stuff and try an artificial scrape, never tried it before... but I've been reading a ton about it, seems to work for many people, never hurts to try I guess. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
I hunted Owen county last weekend, took my wife on her first deer hunt, i felt bad all we got to see was a little spike. the beans are still up and the heavy acorn crop seems to be a non factor, but she wants to go again. Putnam county here we come, wish us luck this weekend. i will let you know how it goes

RE: Indiana Hunters
I went out this evening. Was in the stand about 20 minutes when i heard something in behind me, i turned around and seen the funniest looking buck i have seen in some time. He only had 1 point, it looked like a spike without the other set but this one point had to have been at least 7 inches tall. I just let him walk. That was all i seen in stand, but on the walk back to the truck i seen 9 out in the fields.
Tonight also marked the 3rd night in a row where i have seen a group of deer out in this grass field where i hunt. They were there on Saturday when i went out and scouted around, they were there last night when i drove by and they were there tonight. There is only one tree out there in the field. Im not sure what kind of a tree it is but the deer are feeding directly under it. This tree is only about 60 yards from where i park my truck, i've never even considered hunting there, the property owner keeps it mowed, he pracically considers it his front yard. I may have to get me a stand up on the edge of this field and catch them entering it in the evenings. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
If you are really lucky bigbuck it will be a wild pecan. Deer go crazy over them when they fall. But the ones that I knew about down here are gone now. Yup to the saw mill. Money Money Money.
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Should have read the last couple of lines befor replying. What a bummer for it to be in a considered front yard and a no hunting area. Stand close or a tripod is about your only option.
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Im not sure what it is IndianaHick, i may take tomorrow off hunting wise and just go check this area out. I can hunt this field, im freinds with the owner and he would let me shoot one in his drive if i needed to. He says everynight he comes home from work (around midnight) that those deer are still in that field and sometimes run in front of him in his drive.
It's just strange to me becuase he has a pretty good sized woods in the back full of acorns and a huge crop field on the side, yet all the deer seem to be right in front of the house under a single tree. It's deffinitely dropping something they like. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
;)Feels like deer season in central Indiana
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Thank you, BHG.
I hope the rain holds off tomorrow afternoon. I'd like to hunt all weekend, but my truck just got recalled b/c the brakes are all messed up. I don't mind driving to work in it (5 minute drive), but on the interstate to hunt over an hour away...ugh...not so sure about that. Won't be fixed until Monday...damn'd Chevy. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
who needs brakes they just slow you down anyway
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
deer summary:
2nd week of bow missed a 140 inch 10 pointer.. ended up shooting a basket rack 8 pointer. in vanderburgh county. (deer reduction/urban county).. monday night i saw a 160 inch 10 pointer 400 yard away from a 145 inch 8 pointer.. i would love to watch these bucks in about 2 weeks or so battle it out for dominancy. also saw a 140 inch 8 pointer tonight... bucks have been moving extremely well in southern indiana... more than ever |
RE: Indiana Hunters
"who needs brakes they just slow you down anyway"
Very true if racing Talladega or Daytona with my truck...but when the brakes fail randomly from 1mph to 30mph due to the speedometer sensor setting off the ABS system...it gets kindascary! I'll be out today..rain....or...um...rain. No sunshine predicted today. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Hey Pat, did you hear about the sale going on at the Coliseum? Hunter's View tree stands for $29, blinds, $29 and discounted buddy stands too. They also have knives and all that jazz... I think we are going to swing by there tonight maybe, it goes until 9 tonight and until 8 tomorrow night. If I can get a stand for $29 I'll be elated....
I didn't see much Wednesay night, which I was very surprised about. I saw three does, right at 6, no where close to me, 120 yds away... I did make an artificial scrape about 35 yards from my stand and did a drag down the ditchline to my scrape from where I have been seeing "Bruno". He's got to be at least a heavy 8 or possibly a 10, which to me is a wall hanger. He's the one I want this year, I'm going to keep plugging at it, I need to get out there this weekend and put some more scent out.... strategically placed right down the ditchline. I am a little nervous though, I promised my daughter she could go with me this weekend if she was good, she's been an angel. She's only 6, and I am afraid she will be rather loud and won't sit still enough to get a deer anywhere close, which kinda sucks since I planted those scents/scrape in hopes of luring him closer for the weekend, but such as life... if he comes by once, he'll come by again. I just really want my daughter to be able to see him up close and personal, she would be soooo excited. She'd definitely be a hunter for life. :) She's never seen a nice buck in the wild, only the one hubby has on the wall. Wish us luck! |
RE: Indiana Hunters
BGH- Take her anyway, just go with the idea that you are enjoying the time with your baby girl. If you should see deer so much the better. Also be prepared to go home early as she will probably get tired of sitting, cold and of course hungry. I took my oldest granddaughter several years ago and all we ended up doing was pulling the Toyota into the middle of a wooded area, and sitting in the bed in a couple of lawn chairs. Then about 3 years ago we went again. This time we took a pop up blind and a couple of triangle stools. We went in about 3:30 (after school) and came out just about dark. Now she is 18 and still talks about sitting in that blind watching the spuirrels and looking for deer. She has taken and passed her hunters course with a score of over 90 which was really great for someone in the LD classes.
Anyway take her you will both benifit. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Yeah, I'm going to, she is soooo excited, I wish the weather would have been forecasted to be a little nicer/warmer. She doesn't have warm camo, so I will probably have to buy her some tonight. She is very excited, I told her, it might rain and she didn't care, she said, "I like rain, Mommy!" I said, but it's cold rain when you are in a stand, she said, "You know me, Mom, I never get cold" So, she's ready! I'm excited for it too, this will be her first time ever. :)

RE: Indiana Hunters
i might take my daughter squirell hunting next year when its warm and she doesnt really have to be as quiet i dont want to kill a squirell anyway, she is only 3 and she cant stay quiet for two seconds at home i can imagine her, bored and cold in a deer blind "LOOK DADDY ITS BAMBI!!!"
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Went out again tonight, got there around 3. At 4 i heard what i thought was a squirell on my shooting path to the side of me. I looked back and there stood a 4 point. As he walked along i heard another coming behind him, i could tell this was one was a tad bigger. He stopped at a tree and put on a show for me for about 10 minutes. He went to town on that thing. When he got done and started my way i could tell he was not what i am looking for. He looked like a 6 point with no brow tines, his rack stuck out past his ears but just barely. Too early for me to take a buck like that. Both these guys gave me perfect quartering away shots at 8 yards though. So far in 2 trips i have seen 3 bucks, and they seem to be moving earlier then normal in the evenings. Nothing big yet though, i let several walk last year that were small as well.

RE: Indiana Hunters
I haven't heard about that sale yet..but sounds interesting!
I went out today. It was quite a bit warmer and drier up where I hunt..65 miles north of where I live. Saw deer all over the fields when I was driving up I-69 early afternoon. When I got up there to hunt there was a small 6 pointer standing in a wheat field. After I got in my stand, a really thick spike hobbled out of a crick line 50 yards to my left. Something kicked his @ss...b/c he was running around...then looking behind him. Didn't even pay attention to me grunting. He had that look to him like a dog does when they know they did something wrong...head and tail down. It looked clean though..no blood on either side. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Shot a 7 pointer (8th was broke off) at 7am this morning. After my buddy rattled from across the field, I hit the grunt tube a few time. This guy comes running towards me from some thickets. He poked his head out of the tree line...which is when I saw his thick neck and head. He popped out a few seconds later..which is when I put a deadly heart shot on him.
We waited a while before looking for him. When we started..we kept kicking him up. Blood was everywhere too! So we waited...then continued. Followed the blood trail into an island of tree's...which is so thick we had to follow the blood on our hands and knee's...NO JOKE! After blood trailing him for 2 hours...and while we are in the thick island...we literally walked right on him almost! He jumped up right in front of us...I could have touched him if I had a short stick...he was no more than 3 feet away laying in the thickest vines imaginable! After all of this..I said screw it! Time to hit up Applebee's and get some beer. Went back out...found him 10 yards passed where we left off. I knew I had a good hit on him...but after all the tracking...I thought I was wrong. Turns out I was completely right...cut his heart nearly in half...but yet he still ran for hours?!?! Anywho...field dressed 185lbs! Nice deer...but I've seen some with larger racks..but this one is still ok. ![]() |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Another from the side...with the almighty Mathew's Outback.
P.S. Camera phones suck. ![]() |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Right on Pat. Nothing wrong with that deer at all. Looks like a pretty tall rack. He is bigger then any buck i have seen so far where i hunt. What are you going to do now for shotgun season? I went tonight and got busted by a big doe as i tried to get in position for a shot. Damn thing blew at me for 15 minutes. So far i havent able to get myself out of bed to try the mornings, i think next week will be a different story though. Low temps in the 30's will have those bucks moving.
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Way to go Pat! Congrats, that's a nice deer, we don't exactly grow 'em like Iowa and Illinois, around here, that's a real good deer. :)
I'm going to buy a rattling bag for tonight... I've got to get Bruno in, I want a bow shot with him... if I wait until shotgun and muzzy, the hubby will have him down in his tracks! LOL Anyway... seems like rattling is the key right now, mixed with a little scent, so I'm going to try my hand at it. I will be hunting for a few hours, probably go out at 2:30 or 3, what should my sequence be? 3 or 4 rattles in that time? I dunno, I'm confused, I will post in bowhunting to get a few more responses. Congrats Pat, good darn week for you eh? ;) |
RE: Indiana Hunters
Thanks guys...and VERY good week for me!
When I rattle, I start with grunting a few times..usually try to make it sound like an older deer taking on a younger deer. Then I crash the bag a couple times.....then slow down...couple ticks for a few moments...then crash them again for a few seconds. After I'm done..I grunt a few timesshowing the older buck "won." It's awesome after a minute or two of doing this...then seeing deer pop out of tree lines looking for the action. I've seen it attract fawns...all sorts of bucks...and big does too. Something happened over the course of the past week...got the bucks up and moving like crazy. It's not the temps, in my opinion (mid-upper 50's when I saw them moving the most). Not sure what...but there are rubs and scrapes everywhere now..when last Sunday there was little to be seen. For firearm season (I don't use my shotgun anymore...I use my muzzleloader only), I'll just try to get a doe or two. I can take a couple more antlerless deer up in LaGrange..and 1 in Adams. IF a large buck presented itself...it would be very hard to not take him down (errrr...I mean my brother shoot him and tag him...ah huh huh). Yeah..it's not "right"...but the 1 buck limit studies have shown absolutely NO effect on buck size or numbers so far...so it's not like I'm shooting a whale...or an endangered species. |
RE: Indiana Hunters
I hear ya, Pat...;)
Okay, thanks for the info on rattling... I'm gonna give it a go, but I've never grunted either, I'm afraid of making an @ss of myself to the deer! LOL Anyway, I have seen way LESS activity, doe and buck wise in my area. Don't know what's up with that, but such as life, I don't go hunting enough to really be the best judge of it anyway, two kids will do that to ya, ya know? |
RE: Indiana Hunters
ya buckjs are moving like crazy now in Souther Indiana i followed a rub/scapre line for 1/4 of a mile today there were 9 rubs and 11 scrapes.. but in this last week i have seen more than 10 different bucks..

RE: Indiana Hunters
Hey Indiana Hunters, just wanted to say hey from another huntin hoosier.
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Hey Mike, welcome to the forum! :)
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Thanks BHG, looks like you guys are seeing quite a bit of action
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Took a nice six saturday from about 30 yards,I thought he was an eight but he didnt have any browtines, I dont have any pictures but my wife got it on the palmcorder, double lunged him. he made it about 20 yards, straight down a steepmuddy hill, whichI had to drag him back up, I always do better in putnam county, he dressed a little under 170, now I got my eye on a big doe with a gimpy leg, I watched her and a little spike walk a fence row twice saturday and twice sunday, if they keep it up I am going to set my wife up on them opening morning of shotgun season, cuz its my turn to hold the camera.
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Congrats on the Buck Jason, can you pull any stills off that palmcorder?
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
I dont know how to even try i will read the manual for the camera and see what that says, if i cant figure that out, i cut the top of his skull off and i will get a picture of that and post it up. he is no coat rack but it was a good end to a iffy hunt. he was more than i saw last weekend in owen county.

RE: Indiana Hunters
Congrats bro!

RE: Indiana Hunters
Did anybody see the thing on the cover of the sunday star this week about the canned hunts?????
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
And how about them Colts 7-0 into the bye week!!!
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
I saw it and read it. That guy is making a killing off of his 100 acres. No wonder he doesnt want to see it be banned. $3900 times the 40 people he has booked this year =156,000. Nice 3 day a week job.
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
My theory is, if it cant escape its not a trophy, to me that would be like fishing in an aquarium with a fish flakes for bait.
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Colts better rest up for the Pats...gonna be a tough game. A couple guys at work are flying out there to see it..they said they're gonna start a fight behind the Monday Night Countdown booth. lol

No wonder he doesnt want to see it be banned. $3900 times the 40 people he has booked this year =156,000. Nice 3 day a week job. I've had the displeasure of coresponding with Rodney Bruce at a locally based site(the one in my sig line) , and he's a totally amoral swine . The whole time the cervid meetings were going on he came to the site and raised hell until he was finally kicked off . He doesn't care about deer , all he cares about is money . [:'(] |
RE: Indiana Hunters
I REALLY hope the DNR shuts that guy down..and slaps a big fine on him. Pathetic..sickens my stomach.
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
On the cover of the paper it has a picture of two guys in a blind or something, one of those guys is named George Stone, he is a minister, I met him through family and he actually had me convinced that he was a real hunter. hell, anybody can kill a world record if its fenced up on 100 acres of land, I have lost all respect for him, and to think I was going to let that guy do my wedding ceremony. Im gladI ran off to Gatlinburg now.
|
RE: Indiana Hunters
Well anywho....
Got a ½ day tomorrow..and Friday off. Gonna be gone hunting all weekend...high temps steadily in the mid 50's..with cold nights. Gonna be good. |
