I can't wait to get this ½ day over with...then I'm off to the woods!

RE: Indiana Hunters

Right there with you Pat... I should be in my stand by 2:30 or so... I am a little uneasy about this wind though, it's quite brisk. It's suppose to get up to 20mph today. I should have taken my half day yesterday, or this morning, it would have been the right time. I just talked to my maintence guy and he said there were deer in every field this morning on his way to work. [:-] Hope that means there will be deer in MY field tonight. Wish me luck, this will be my first time going hunting by myself... I know it will seem weird to all of the guys out here, but I wasn't raised in the woods like my husband was... he just can't understand why I don't like to walk out by myself at dark, but I've never had to deal with it before! He keeps encouraging me to come out by myself and I keep saying "I'm not ready yet". So I had my guts about me last Sunday, I was going to come out... all by myself... in the dark... but then he ended up coming over to my stand because the yin yins were under his, so I didn't have to. But today, it's just me, myself, and I... I'm fine to walk through the day, doesn't bother me, I can see everything around me, but at night, I HATE not being able to see what's around me, even with a flashlight, but I'm gonna do it today. Once I do it, it should get me over my fear... I HOPE.

I feel like an idiot. I love to hunt, and I'd sit in the stand every day, but I hate walking through by myself. What a hunter, eh? Sheesh... maybe tonight things will change for me.

RE: Indiana Hunters

When our two daughters were married they both bought last years model type dresses, and the least fancy then an aunt added extra lace and beads, etc. Since we were church members the church did not cost anything, But we did give the preacher, organist, etc something. As for the reception afterword where my father in law worked had a club house and he got that. Extremely low cost, just had to pay for cleaning. Both weddings were really nice. I doubt if we had more than 2 K in each. I did not ask did not want to know.

Man where are you guys hunting all I have seen is 3 does and all at extremly long range. But then again both beans and corn are still in in that area.

It is slow. I have not been seeing many either Oct. 1-6 I have only seen 27 does and 2 bucks. I hope it starts picking up.

Heard it through two residents today that we have a 12 pointer in the woods on "work" property, so I am hunting tomorrow... from the ground though, kinda hard to get a stand back there with residents eyes watchin' me... [:-]

RE: Indiana Hunters

Gonna get dressed and then heading up north!

BHG...walking around outdoors in the dark sucks no matter who you are..especially if you are not familiar with the land. Although I'm more worried about tripping over a big rock than I am getting bit by snakes...it still sucks.

Buck Huntin Girl 10-07-2005 07:58 PM

RE: Indiana Hunters

Good day in the stand, 4 does, three bucks... all about 80-100yds. Two nice bucks, one small one... I'm happy with the results. :) Oh... and I got out by myself ALIVE! :)

Pat Curtis 10-07-2005 08:34 PM

RE: Indiana Hunters

Got a button buck today. I thought it was a doe...b/c how big it was compared to a spike that was behind it. Got in my stand at 3:40...deer was dead by 3:45. They came out of a swamp to my left...poked out of the tree line..started eating beans..then I dropped it dead in it's tracks. Thought it was a doe until we started dragging it to the truck..then noticed the bumps. Big button buck though. [8D]

Pic from my stand less than 5 minutes after the shot.

Great job Pat. It's nice when you dont have to track them anywhere. This cooler weather is what we need, i hope it keeps coming. I dont even have all my stands hung yet, gonna go out tomorrow and put them up, maybe go out hunting for the first time late next week.

Buck Huntin Girl 10-08-2005 07:53 AM

RE: Indiana Hunters

Nice job, Pat! I didn't have anything within bow range... had it been muzzleloader season, I'd have a nice buck to hang on the wall ;) It's okay, at least I know they are there, it's only a matter of time before they end up coming my way. :) Hopefully tonight... that would be great! I guess my hubby hasn't gotten anything yet this morning, he hasn't called and he has to get out of his stand in about 20 minutes in order for me to go into work by 10. My maintence guy must not have gotten anything either, no phone calls from him yet... oh well. I guess they are just waiting for ME to shoot them... [8D]

Hey Pat, remind me where you hunt again? You aren't hunting in the Decatur area are you?? For some reason I was thinking you hunted Steuben County, but I may have you confused with someone else...

Pat Curtis 10-09-2005 01:50 PM

RE: Indiana Hunters

I do hunt family land outside of Decatur...but mainly hunt some land in LaGrange...but it's within a mile ofSteuben, Noble, and Dekalb counties. It's the south eastern tip of LaGrange.

About got a big doe yesterday..another 15 yards and she would have been mine. Saw nothing this morning though.

RE: Indiana Hunters

Had a crazy day... walked to the stand by myself this morning... in the dark (well, mostly dark, 6:00), kicked one out of the woods, got to my stand, started climbing up, my bow tinged against the ladder, kicked one up about 15 yds behind my stand, got up to the stand, lay my bow on the seat, turn around, pick my bow up, deer coming right across the beans straight to me... hear crunching to the left, can tell it's a deer coming down the bean field/ditchline towards my stand, doe in the field staring at doe headed down the ditch line, doe in the field never sees me, but apparently doe on the ditchline does, all of the sudden, white tails up around the bean field, at least 5 of them, maybe more... so I sit for an hour and a half, see two does headed out about 200 yards... good morning, no shots, but lots of deer...

So, sittin in same stand tonight, about 4:30 ish button buck I've been getting on my game cam comes out in a grassy area about 30 yards to my left... piddlyfarts around there for a while, finally presented a shot, took shot, shot directly under him. He jumpes from fear... then he proceeds to stand there and piddlyfart around... again... I say screw it, I am not thinking I should take another shot like that, so i don't and he gets scared by a SQUIRREL and trots down the ditch line away from me... 10 minutes later, he's back, but he cuts into the woods... 15 minutes later, he's back, cuts across the ditch and I couldn't see him from then on because of the damn leaves on the trees.... sooo... 5 minutes later, two does (maybe one button buck) come out at about 50-60 yards, doe eventually takes off, smaller doe (or button) lays down in the beans... all of the sudden too, just lays down! I was like, WHAT? It had been making it's way towards me when it laid down. So, 45 minutes later, it's back up, and coming straight for me, it puts it's head in the beans, I stand up and get ready... takes his good 'ol gettin' to me...

So, it's coming, about 25 yards out, I'm ready, standing steady, he gets to the edge of the ditch 15-20 yards and stands behind a tree for a while, starts to come out, so I draw back, it's broadside, but it stops almost out from behind the tree, but not quite, so I let down my draw, and wait.... again...it finally steps out and I draw back and let go. It turns and runs, back towards the grassy area where I missed the first one, but I shot him on theleft side (if you were facing him head on), but I SWEAR, when he turned and ran the other way, my arrow was on hisright side, almost all of the way out... but I'm serious, unless my mind was playing tricks, the fletching was sticking out on his right side... the FLETCHING, now tell me this, is it common for your mind to play tricks, because I don't see ANY possible way the arrow could have turned completely around!? :eek:I have pink and purple fletching, so now I'm thinking what I saw was the arrow come all of way through and I was seeing blood on the broadhead... that HAD to be the case! Okay, so that must be what it is... I swear I saw purple and pink fletching, wow, that is weird. Well, anyway, to make a long story as short as possible, my husband and my best friend's hubby are out tracking right now. Wish me luck... I don't want that sick feeling of "I wounded a deer"... :(

Buck Huntin Girl 10-09-2005 08:53 PM

RE: Indiana Hunters

Hubby found him 40 yards from where I shot him, I shot my buddy though, I shot the little button buck we got 3 different days (6 pictures total) on our game cam, we named him "Bucky" and said we weren't going to shoot at him this year, we'd give him time to grow... well, as the story goes, I couldn't tell it was him from that far out so I took the shot. Hit him right in the tooshie somehow, I SWEAR his toosh was behind a tree!!! Right in the main artery, didn't get very far before he went down... I'm proud of my first bow kill, I really am proud of THAT, but I feel badly that I shot "Bucky"... I didn't intend on it, if I woulda known it was him, I would NOT have taken that shot. As I said in the bowhunting forum though, he will still taste good at dinnertime, but I hate that it was *him* :(

RE: Indiana Hunters

Congrats, BHG. We need more women hunters. I have never seen a woman hunter in IN. I have in other states.
Sat. I had 12 does come by
Sat. Evening 8 does 1 spike and 6 pt
Sun. Morning 4 does and 8 pt that was about an 1 outside his ears on each side but he did not have very good tine length. 4-5 inches. He was right under me.
Sun. Evening 13 does 1 spike 1-4 point.

The guy I hunt on has 3 small alfalfa fields and I sit over those in the evenings. They come out in groups. I have never seen anything like it. It is the only field food source for a mile so it is pack right now.

bigbuckOO 10-10-2005 09:37 AM

RE: Indiana Hunters

Congrats BHG. My first bow kill was a shot similar to yours here. I hit him way too far back and thought for sure he would be wounded. Went over to the spot I hit him and there was just circles of blood that looked like it was spraying everywhere. Ended up finding him about 50 yards from where i shot him. That femural artery is deadly if you hit i. It's not a fair sport sometimes, i hit a doe 2 years ago with what looked like a perfect shot. I got down and me and my buddy tracked real good blood for about 100 yards, then it just stopped. Never could find another drop.

Buck Huntin Girl 10-10-2005 10:42 AM

RE: Indiana Hunters

bigbuck... I had the same thing last year, hit a doe, had good blood, but didn't find it for about 70 yds from the shot, bled for 150 yards or so then POOF... it was gone! Never found her, made me sick to my stomach. I was just glad my bad shot turned good for me (and "Bucky"), I really woulda felt awful if I lost another one... I can guarantee I wouldn't be back in the stand until I was able to shoot that muzzleloader of mine...

As far as women hunters, we definitely need more of them, but I'm finding a few that have an interest in taking it up... which is good. My maintenence guy and myself found out one of our contractors, major tomboy, 20 years old, wants to take it up, bowhunting and all! So, he found a bow that is perfect size for her and I think she's gonna buy it, so we will get her dialed in and next year hopefully she will have her first kill under her belt. :)

RE: Indiana Hunters

I was planning on going Saturday all day and Sunday, just found out Tuesday that we are on a Mandatory open house at work and both myself (asst. prop. mgr) and my property manager are required to attend, this will make the 3rd weekend in a row I've worked, next weekend will be the fourth [:@][:-] I'm starting to get peeved... I have been planning this as my hunting weekend for a month now, and it's all messed up now. Open house starts at 10am, goes until 4pm, pretty much screws up the whole notion of going to the stand Saturday. I suppose I could go Saturday morning and get out at 9, be back in time to change clothes and show homes... but it puts a damper on my evening hunt. I'm so bummed. On top of all that, I've developed a nice little cold to accompany me through the next couple of weeks I'm sure, complete with a sore throat and mild fevers.... some week it's been.

RE: Indiana Hunters

I know how it feels to have to work weekends BHG, the place i worked made me work every weekend when i was on part time. When i moved up to full time, they did my schedule differently then everyone elses, i had to do a 7 day stretch every other week. Which meant i was working 2 weekends a month. Everyone else worked Mon-Fri and one saturday a month. I put up with this BS for 7 months after being promoted to full time status, then i complained, coincidentally 3 weeks later they terminated me, said i was "endangering others on the job".

Im still fighting them over this, thats part of the reason i havent been out hunting. The state awarded me unemployment and said they had absolutely no proof of "just cause". They appealed it and i just so happen to have a proffessor who is a lawyer and he has been helping me prepare. I hope to stick it to them again at the hearing next Thursday. Then im going hunting as soon as its over, and i will be happy when that time comes.

It's Friday. And pay day. I am ready to head to the camper. I only saw 17 Monday - Thursday. Very slow, evenings only. But the crops are coming out so that should help. I am ready to go to Madison and hunt and hang out.

Went out tonight to check up on my stands and see what signs i could find. Found several small rubs, one was about 2 feet from my stand. Didnt see any big rubs though, mostly small ones. I also found 2 scrapes. As for deer, i seen 6 despite all the noise i was making walking through the woods. All the crops are down that surround the woods, looks like its good to go. I will be out there hunting for the first time this season later this week. This full moon we will have should kick the pre rut into high gear. Hopefully it cools down.

VERY slow weekend for me. Saw a few deer in bean fields in the evenings..but that's it. Too warm..and today it was way too windy. Tomorrrow will be spent with the woman..so have fun hunting w/o me.

RE: Indiana Hunters

I haven't even gotten a chance to go... I went out last night, got in my stand and realized it was NOT going to work out for me... my stand was blowin', my hat kept blowing off... tree was rocking... got down and scouted for scrapes and rubs for 20 minutes and went home. I didn't go yesterday morning because I hadn't felt well the night before, got up to go this morning and the hubby didn't feel like going, crawled back into bed and I only slept an hour longer... I shoulda gone this morning. I'm gonna try it tonight, but it's fairly windy again, so who knows.

Hubby doesn't really want to go tonight either, but I think he is going to just to suffice me. :D I guess he's kinda depressed with the whole hunting thing this year, he's rather disgusted with what's left of our woods. 4-wheelers run through it all summer and right up to and including first week of bow season, he's convinced the deer no longer feel secure in our woods so they are just using it to "pass through". I have seen a ton of deer this year though, plus I have that button buck under my belt, so I don't feel the same way. I really hope he shoots one tonight so he gets pumped up again, it's depressing me, he's my huntin' buddy, when he doesn't want to go, it's only 1/2 the fun. :(

Sorry BigOrange..can't help ya there.

Saturday was VERY windy! The morning wasn't too bad..but then we went to an Applebee's. Three 22oz of Budweiser's later..plus a sampler platter..and I was half gone. Yeah..I know..not very responsible..but it sure was fun!

RE: Indiana Hunters

LOL... I did my drinkin' on Saturday too... got to my stand, too windy, said screw it, I'll go home and drink some beer!

Sunday, didn't go in the morning, twisted hubby's arm to go in the evening, glad I did. I saw 6 deer, 2 bucks, little 7 or 8, think it was a small 8, but hard to tell through binocs at 150yds.... climbing out of stand at 6:20, looked down the ditchline and there was a nice one in the corner of the bean field (can't see it from sittin' in stand, only from ladder), didn't have enough light to see real well through binocs, but it looked like a good 10 point anyway... I've GOT to find a tree down there that will hold my stand, I won't even have a shot with my muzzie come season because of a tree blocking the view. If I can't find a tree, I'm gonna have to invest in a ground blind, I can't miss that opportunity, that's a wall hanger for me... and lots and lots of jerky and summer sausage:D

Hopefully I'll get a shot, seeing some scrapes and rubs, the maintence guy just took me out and showed me 4 rubs on the property here (the one we got permission to bowhunt granted the residents don't scope us out...) We have GOT to get a stand up there too, 3 reports of a 10 pointer sighted back there too...

I sure wish the temps would start dropping...and the corn fields be shelled. I hate sweating in a stand..with gnat's all around me..while I see deer walking down the row's of a corn field 100 yards away. It's past the middle of October already..and I have yet to have frost on my truck. I remember when I was in High School a few years ago...it snowed the day my nephew was born..October 9th.

The heat is a pain, its supposed to cool off this weekend though. Highs around 60 degrees. Thats a lot better then mid 70's. Were approaching the end of October though and that is always when deer activity picks up, regardless of weather. We had a light frost this morning i noticed while leaving for class. Im going to go out Wednesday night and then hunt up through Sunday.

Pat, you pumped for the game tonight?? I may miss the kick, im scheduled for class till 9, but he usually lets us out at 8. If he goes much over i may just get up and leave, lol.

I dont have much a voice right now, i went nuts after we got down 17. Good thing we came back, i had that feeling that this would be the game we lose that we should not and and it would cost us HFA.

RE: Indiana Hunters

No one watched the pennant chase last night? I would love to see the Astros take it to Chicago and play my Sox... but DANG, what a shot by Pujols in the 9th! The best part of the game was when the commentator says after Molena ripped a shot into right center and the fielder dove and missed, "Why not dive for the ball out there, it's Molena, he couldn't make it to third if he were playing on a little league field with no fence!" LOL I was LMAO for a while after that.

Anyway, went back and checked on the scrapes here on work property today.... some doe tracks in 'em that weren't there yesterday. Saw a monster print in the fresh mud on the outskirts of the little 4 acre woods we have here... about 2" (no kidding) deep and freakin' HUGE. The scrapes are all made in a patch of fallen acorns, 4 of them, one pretty big. It just dawned on me to set up my trailcam there to catch the action. I still haven't gotten a stand up there... my maintence guy is suppose to be building it, but the tallest 2x4 we have is 8 feet. :eek:I have GOT to get back there during PTDT (prime time deer time) to scout it. I wish I woulda got permission to hunt it BEFORE season started. [:@] I just didn't think there was any way in heck that the Mgr. would say go for it, as nice of a guy as he is, I figured he'd see it as a potential resident complaint problem...

I flipped back and forth between the football and baseball game. After the Cards got down by two I watched the colts mostly. Sure thought that they were going to get it put to them by the rams. Highly disappointed after the first quarter. The Rams were sure playing to shut down the passing game. I believe that most of the Colts opponets this year are going to be playing the pass first. Edge has to have a good game to get them out of it also. I did check back on the Cards in the top of the 9th and seen Edwards draw his walk and returned in time to see reruns of Pujols homer. Yes!!! If the Astro's get in I will have to be for the Sox. But then again I was for the Sox in 59. Ha Ha.

They started picking the corn down here today. Now if the temps would only drop and the full moon would wain things would pick up in the deer woods. Yeah.
