Hennepin shoot

Just wondering who's going to make it to the Hennepin shoot? Looks like I'm going, so my partner better not back out! Otherwise I've told my wife she's next in line.

What's the canal like? I've never seen it.

Bulzeye 05-01-2006 11:37 AM

RE: Hennepin shoot

My Dad and I are going. We're driving out Friday night.

Several of the guys that participated last year are not big "on-line" guys, so you may not see them respond here, but they know the water and shoot the canal all summer, so I'm sure they'll be there.

Mark, I'm sure your partner will not stand you up. He knows the value of a commitment, especially since the guy who was going tobe his partner last year left him high and dry.

RE: Hennepin shoot

The canal is a big place, and covers many miles.
The shoreline is easy to walk and most, if not all of it has a walking path within feet of the water.

Here are some links I used to do some arm-chair scouting last year before the first shoot. There is history, maps, and other good info. Use the numbered locks and bridges as landmarks to navigate. See thetournament's rule sheet for the boundaries of the competition area.

The canal is murky, but loaded with fish. In most places, the opposing shores are close enough to lob a fish arrow over, but that would get you disqualified. [:@]Hope for a warm sunny day since the fish surface in groups when the sun hits the water.

RE: Hennepin shoot

Hey Mark, the Hennepin is very similar to the I&M. Actually, I'd say identical. It's a cool place to shoot. There were plenty of fish, and from what some of the locals told us, there are TONS of carp and gar in there. We just didn't have ideal conditions. It was windy and unseasonably cold last year. I'm sure this year will be better.

Oh, and I'm DEFINETLY going to be there. I told youguys that the only way I would miss it would be for a VERY good reason, but I don't see anything like that happening.

Robow, Bill, Johnny B., you guys coming up?

Johnny b 05-01-2006 01:16 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Well Let's see, Me (Johnny b) and my buddy Snuffy are signed up and going. KBI-PREZ is wanting to go but cannot get his partner to make a commitment. He may be looking for a partner if any one needs one. I too am curious how it all works with us starting at one point and just walking past each other? I am bring my wifes garden cart, like an over sized wagon to hall the fish. Then what do we do with them? It looks like we will have to leave by 3am to get there in time with a little to spare.

bowman15 05-01-2006 01:20 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Hey Johnny, we posted within seconds of each other. Glad you're gonna make it. Hope KBI finds a partner.

Oh, and there's something like seven miles of shootable canal open to us, so we won't be all right on top of each other. Maybe we should all meet for breakfast.

Johnny b 05-01-2006 01:37 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

I'm sure that breakfast will work for us. After a 3.5 hour drive we will be ready. Glad to hear we will have that much elbow room. With the mississippi feeding it there should be some big heads in there also. Just really love wacking those things..see ya there.

HNI_Christine 05-01-2006 02:02 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

My impression of the canal is that it's small and narrow and filled with carp.

I never left the starting point so I don't have that much experience with it...but I did see a lot of carp come up once the sun finally came out.

I'm bringing a garden cart too. :)

Since check-in time for the shoot is 8:00, how about we meet at the McDonald's right in Geneseo, on hwy 6/82 between 6:30 and 7:00 ?
It's 5 minutes from the starting point, and very easy to find.

Go to this link, then zoom in.

Well i am still in search of a partner....Robow cant make it since it was changed to saturday he and i were gonna team up........im tryin

KBI-PREZ 05-01-2006 03:18 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

YOu know Johnny B. brings up a very interesting point. Has anyone seen or know of bigheads inthe canal......

Mark S 05-01-2006 05:20 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

McDonald's works for me if Bowman's up for it. Haven't talked about how we're getting there yet. I just got rid of my crew cab truck, otherwise I would have offered to carpool Bulzeye.

A garden cart sounds like a good idea. Maybe next year it could be a night shoot and we could equip the carts with some HPS's and generator!

bowman15 05-01-2006 06:06 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Could we maybe try and find something a little better than Mcdonalds? Maybe just a nice sit-down place?

Johnny and Bill, I don't knowthat the bigheads will be that far up the Hennepin from the Mississippi. They could be I guess.

HNI_Christine 05-01-2006 06:24 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

I too vote for something better than Mcdonalds. [:'(]

Please?

JRW 05-01-2006 10:03 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

You folks will eat a carp, but complain about McDonald's? That's kind of like driving a '74 Pinto, but refusing to ride in a Buick. I'm not sure whether to laugh or be extremely scared about what the heck must be in my Chicken McNuggets. [:'(]

Jason, be scared about the McNuggets

I vote for somewhere other than McD's also

RE: Hennepin shoot

Alrighty then. Bulzeye, since you're going out friday-night, see if you can find us a decent place to meet up for breakfast. Everyone can keep in touch on their way in the morning of and we'll meet there. How's that sound?

Johnny b 05-02-2006 09:09 AM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Well KBI-PREZ finally coerce'd his buddy to go with him. They are suppose to send in the registration today. So the 4 of us will be traveling together and will be hungry. So keep us in the loop as to where we will be eating. See ya.

Bulzeye 05-02-2006 03:04 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Sure, vote me down, and then make me find a new place to go. [8D]
I see how it is now.
It's a good thing none of you are going to win the shoot.

I gotta admit, MickyD's is not my favorite either.
I was just going for 'easy to find' and 'sure to be open at that hour'.

There's probably another spot to go, but I'm not going to get out there friday until after they've rolled up the sidewalks, but I'll see what I can do.
I'll getin touch withGrant in the next day or two and enlist his help finding a spot that's open early. Then maybe I'll tell y'all where it is.

HNI_Christine 05-02-2006 05:33 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

You find a decent spot and then I'll buy you breakfast. Deal?

(shhh... don't tell Steve.. he'll be jealous.) ;)

I was wondering if you were gonna make it Jason. That'll be cool. Haven't seen you since Silver Springs last fall. Between you, Christine and I, we should have plenty of pics of the shoot.

Christine's buying breakfast? Count me in!

Bowman15,

I'd like to go, but need a partner (I suppose).

HNI_Christine 05-05-2006 07:10 AM

RE: Hennepin shoot

I'm sure Grant will let you be a team of one. ;)

I think Mikey is looking to re-arrange his work schedule so he can make it there. I'll let you know what I hear from him.

That would be great to get JRW and Fishngame up there too. :):):)

Still waiting to hear where we are having breakfast, especiall when I seen Christine was buying. I have seen KBI-PREZ eat. Too bad he does'nt like fish sticks.. johnny b.

bowman15 05-07-2006 08:53 AM

RE: Hennepin shoot

It looks like we're gonna have to wait for Bulzeye to get out there friday and see for himself were we can meet. We'd have to meet somewhere around 6:30 to have enough time to eat and still get to check-in in time.

Somewhere close that has quick service....You're talking more like 6am if we have a large group. That means we'll have to leave about 3:30 am ....LOL, no.... ROTFLMAO. I'll try....you guys have our phone numbers if we're not there in time to order. :D

bowman15 05-08-2006 05:00 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Yeah, you're right. Check-in is 7:30 a.m. Maybe 5:30 even. I would assume there'd be someplace open early; it is a farm-town after all.

HNI_Christine 05-09-2006 05:16 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Grant said that 15 teams are signed up. Just one spot left! :)

He also gave me a list of restaurants. Only two are open early enough.

Atkinson-(about 10 miles east of Geneseo)
Cattle Club- opens @ 6:00 -on Rt 6. On the East
side of town across from Wyffels Hybrids in the Chicago
Stockyards bldg.

Annawan (about 18 miles east of Geneseo)

Purple Onion- opens @ 5:30 -on Rt 6. downtown.
(West of the 4 way stop on Rt. 6 about 300yds)

bowman15 05-09-2006 05:34 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Cool! Then I guess you're officially in charge of where we go to eat and what time to meet there.

Oh fearless leader....

Bulzeye 05-09-2006 08:59 PM

RE: Hennepin shoot

OK, I'm back.
It took me longer than expected to get in touch with Grant due to some long hours at work and crazy evenings at home with my wife starting up a new in-home business.

Anyway, I see you've already gotten the same info I got just minutes ago from Grant. Good, at least we're on the same page. Unless somebody sees the need to meet before 6am, my vote goes to the Cattle Club since Atkinson is closer to the check-in point than Annawan by several miles.

bowman15 05-10-2006 03:34 AM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Alrighty. The latest message I got from Grant says that he wants us to start check-in at 7:10 a.m. So if we're meeting for breakfast, it better be as early as possible, or ...?

Oh, and I don't remember how to get there.[&:]

HNI_Christine 05-10-2006 08:07 AM

RE: Hennepin shoot

Bulz is still in charge. I agree that the Cattle Club is probably the best spot. Plus maybe we can drop the Wyffels name and get a discount. ;)

We need to get there right at opening time if we're going make it. Speed eating will be helpful too. [:o]

:D Just kidding Bulz. You'll do fine.

RE: Hennepin shoot

I hope their cook has a good work ethic, because we'll need to put away lots of fuel for all that walking. I was thinking of making a reservation, but getting an accurate count ofchow-hounds this late in the game would be a joke, so I'll just give them a heads-up with a possiblenumber of 30, and maybe see if they would consider opening a bit early to accomodate a crowd.

No worries,Carpsniper, I eat plenty, and often. It's just that this furnace I've got for a body burns up every darned thing I throw into it. I'm always eating at work, usuallywhen I'm supposed to be working. :D
