African Safari
In the heart of Namibia, approximately 185 miles northwest of Windhoek, lies a wildlife paradise called Okosongoro. In Herero, Okosongoro means "the place of the zebra".
The 40,000 acre Ranch is surrounded by rugged mountain ranges that fall off into vast grass savannahs and rolling hills of acacia and thorn bush. These conditions are ideal for various types of wildlife and flora.
Your hosts, Uta and Peter Clausen, are third and fourth generation Namibians of German descent. Peter's Grandfather bought the farm in 1921 as a working cattle ranch. It has since been changed to a hunting ranch and hunts have been conducted for over 25 years. For his wildlife conservation and trophy hunting efforts, Peter was elected "Wildlife farmer of the year" in 1992. The endangered black rhino and white rhino can both be found on the Ranch.
Okosongoro offers 25 different species to the hunter, including the majestic sable and roan. All can be hunted on the Ranch, without relocating to different areas.
During the hunting season which runs from March to the end of October, Okosongoro conducts only 20 hunts with Peter personally guiding most of them.
Namibia is well below the Equator and the seasons will be reversed from the northern hemisphere. The climate is consistently dry, warm and free of humidity. The daytime temperatures can climb well into the 90 degree range during September and October, while the nights and early morning hours during June, July and August can approach freezing. Some scattered rain showers can be expected in March and April.
A .30 caliber magnum rifle with a proper scope is the ideal all around rifle for Namibia. You can bring your own or rent a rifle or shotgun for bird hunting from Peter. Most shots will be taken in the 100 to 200 yard range. We assume a hunter to be in reasonable physical condition, a decent shot and that the safari will be of long enough duration to provide an opportunity to hunt the various animals.
Hunting wear should be comfortably fitting. We suggest cotton clothing in khaki or olive green. A pair of well fitting boots is essential. We recommend layering clothing since temperature changes throughout the day can be significant. Remember, laundry is done daily, so don't bring a lot of extra things; you won't use them.
