RE: What type of knife do you use?
I have a ton of knives and am kind of a collector. When it comes to what I use most? The Buck-lite folders I like a short blade so there is not so much to sharpen. I do use one bigger knife, a Cold Steel Master Hunter.

RE: What type of knife do you use?
I use a case exchanger, has three blades that can be exchanged on the handle, two are knife blades and one is a saw blade which i use to cut through the pelvic bone. i found over the years that a case will remain sharp when other fail. Not sure if they even make them now, but when i did get my hands on them, i bought six and gave them to some of my friends.

RE: What type of knife do you use?
I have used numerous knives for deer. My favorite so far is the Knives of Alaska Yukon hunter, which has now been discontinued. I found that out after I sold it and got a custom made knife. Had I known that is was going to be discontinued I woud have kept it.
That Yukon kept an edge better than any other knife I had, it was very sturdy and I had no problems cutting thru the chest cavity of a deer, and it fit my hands perfectly. I hope to be able to pick up a used one before next season. I went thru several Remingtons that just fell apart after two seasons. So far, I like this custom made knife, but I jsut miss that Yukon! RE: What type of knife do you use?
buck fixed blade 6 "; and a smoky mountain hatchette, gerber fixed blade for skinning; folding buck hunter for smaller game
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
always had a Buck for deer hunting. Had a couple stolen and got a Camillus - I like them - they make a good knife. I also purchased a new Buck with a guthook. I works pretty good. Need to get the "hang" of it - meaning getting the hook thru the hide and tissue. Litlle tought to do with a "fat" deer, but I still like it. One thing I did notice is that the fancy wooded handle gets slick when wet (bloody). Rubber handle would be better.

RE: What type of knife do you use?
I bought a Puma folder in 82. It broke last year. A small piece of the locking mechanism broke off . I sent it back to Puma, they sent me a new one back. After 25 yearsof use they still replaced it. Now thats standing behind a product!

RE: What type of knife do you use?
I have used a Buck Zipper with the Sure-Grip handle for the last ten years or so. It's the best field dressing knife for deer that I've ever used.

RE: What type of knife do you use?
I use the gerber gator with the ats34 drop point blade.I also have the newer version with the cm154 blade. Both sharpen to a very fine edge and hold the edge much longer than any other blade that I have used. For $65 canadian they are a great buy.

RE: What type of knife do you use?
Buck zipper, Buck Skinner and Buck 110.
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
Dozier custom handmade. Simply the best knives made, IMO. www.dozierknives.com. Coming from years with Buck, etc (which are fine knives - I'm not knocking them at all), I'll never look back.
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
Kershaw Elk Skinner(with guthook) and also pack one made by a local knifemaker, Charlie Clifton.
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I've used a Coleman/Western Stainless Skinner for almost 25 years now! For a cheap knife it has served well! Holds a good edge and feels good in the hand, and is still as good as the day I bought it.
As far as pocket knives go, I love Case and Buck too, but for a hunting knife, I just can't seem to retire the old Coleman! |
RE: What type of knife do you use?
Kershaw Blade Trader is better than sliced bread. They sharpen real nice and the blades are inexpensive to replace.
I use the Alaskan for the field and have a multi blade set-up for the kitchen. |
RE: What type of knife do you use?
i use the legendary rambo bowie knife....i love this knife ...does all my dirty work.....and the small knife i carry is the schrade beast knife nice little knife...
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I use a Gerber game pro and an other Gerber knife as well as a Gerber bone saw and montana knife
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
My favorite was a case xx changer that went missing on a trip[:o] I own several but use these mostly:
Gerber on my belt -General Purpose Kershaw Blade Trader in my pack - Field dressing, trimming lanes, skinning, etc. Boning/Butchering - Victorniox 6" boning knives Caping - Puma caper - fleshing |
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I handled a Buck zipper with rubber handle at Cabelas. I really thought that it wouldn't be much less "slippery when wet". They need a handle made out a "maleable", softer rubber that can bee "squeezed". Sort of like a polymer gun sling. Just a thought.

RE: What type of knife do you use?
I'm with JagMagMan. I have a 20+ year old Coleman/Western fixed blade drop point knife that I never hunt without. It came with a 99 year warranty, and I don't think I'll ever need to call them on it. The knife holds an edge well, and is just as good as the day I bought it.

RE: What type of knife do you use?
I use a folding crossman that my dad bought me for my birthday 15yrs ago. I have cleaned & skinned every thing I shot since then with that knife. Last year I field dressed a deer for a buddy using his knife which had a gut hook. I do not remeber what brand it was but after using it my next knife will have a gut hook for sure. I really like the Buck or Kar-bar line.
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
A buck zipper has gotten most of the use the last severaly years. Very satisfactory. I've also had great luck with various gerbers and kershaws. I am a real fan of gut hooks--I no longer feel the need to pack around a wyoming knife. I prefer fixed over folding for a primary knife, but always keep at least 1 extra folder with me for Murphy's law. There's nothing like walking up on a downed animal to find your knife is back at the truck or atv a mile down the mountain!

RE: What type of knife do you use?
i use a old timer Blade Runner Guthook 143ot its hevey but nise
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
Old timer 3 blade pocket knife. When sharpened correctly, you can't beat them in my opinion. It fits in my pocket daily and serves well for deer, turkey, and small game. When I butcher game, I use a Gerber fillet knife.
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
i use a kershaw blade changing knife as well as an old timer and a deer antler handle knife my grandfather made.......Call me strabge but sometimes i use a scalpul when i am skinning beavers.......
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
hiawatha,
those make some handy knives. I personally use the buck folding hunter. But i'm like Hiawatha. I got a whole set of tools I've made and scalpal I use for caping clients animals. I been to taxidermy school and believe me taxidermists really hate hacked up capes. |
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I use a Helle "Eggen" just a great, practically unbreakable piece of steel. U can use it as a razor too.
another knife I use daily is an Eka, model Nordic hunter. Handy little knife. |
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I've got a Buck folder and it;s been my knife of choice for most of my life. Almost cut my finger off with it once.....

RE: What type of knife do you use?
I have a pretty good collection of knives. Not as many as some, but to me, it's a pretty good selection.
I even have one that was custom made, it's an awsome skinning knife and holds an edge forever...The thing is, the steel is so hard it would take six hundred years of dragging it across a stone to re-sharpen it.:D But here is what I have found out over the years: It really does'nt matter what kind of knife you use, if you take your time, you will end up with a quality job in the end. For what it's worth, I always seem to come back to the "old" Buck 110 folding lock blade. It's easy to sharpen and do the work, but if you break it, you don't really have that much invested in it. |
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I keep a couple of knives hanging from my belt First is a Buck Zipper, and a Gerber Cameleon

RE: What type of knife do you use?
I have used thse buck folding hunter and the gerber gators and both work well. My brother in-law works for case and gave me an exchanger 3 years ago and it a great knife. It's what I use now.
LeeinVa , the exchanger is still being made. It comes with a forth blade now for filleting. |
RE: What type of knife do you use?
an old timer by schrade that has a gut hook on it ,works like a charm!
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
A buck folder to or a fixed blade its a buck also.
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I've been using a old Timer fixed blade with a gut hook and a big green Kraton handle... It aint much to look at but it works great when it gets bloody. i also carry a Buck 105 I found hunting about 14 years ago.. it a good back up. I always carry a folder, right now I have a small Gerber folder. These dang tanks are always seeming to eat my knives up... I also feel uncomfortable if I dont have my old leatherman on me...
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
Randal knives are very very nice. I have a cold steel that I am quite pleased with, but when it comes to cleaning game, I have found that a 35mm film container full of new razor blades comes in handy.
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I use a GatorĀ® folding drop point, but the blade is made with CM-154 and not 400 Series stainless steel like the new ones.
I've skinned at least 4 deer with it, and it hasn't lost its edge. I'm very happy with it. skunkie. ![]() |
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I use Gerber, Buck, and Ka-Bar knives. I do like Buck knives the best though.
|
RE: What type of knife do you use?
I kinda collect knives so I own quite a few. Not all are hunting knives though.
My favorite hunting knife is custom made from high quality stainless bar stock. I don't remember what type of steel. After rough cutting the knife, it is sent out to be cyrogenicaly treated for hardness and temper. It was made by a friend that got into knife making. The guy is an craftsman. This particular knife is a 4" drop point with cocco bolo scales. I got the knife in 1999. So far, I've field dressed 20 deer with it. |
