Default Grown in tree pegs HELP!

I have neglected a couple tree stands on my property. I am now trying to get tree pegs that are grown in, out. Does anyone have an easy way of doing this without too much butchering to the tree. I chopped away at the bark and had success but it's so labor intensive. I'm thinking about drilling a hole above and sides to just pull it out. Any help out there?

drill in beside them, get oil or grease in there, they'll come out
