50mm or 42mm-Help!!
You guys have been a great help with my new gun/scope combo. I have greatly appreciated it! The gun is in, a Savage 16bss .270wsm, and I just placed my scope order yesterday.
I chose the Swarovski A-line 3-10x42. Now, a day later, I am having reservations(kind of like the day before a wedding! ). Should I have gone with the 4-12x50? Would it gather that much more light?-I don' t need the 12 power, so that isn' t the concern.
My shots could range from 30 to 50 yards in thick cover, low light, in the UP of Michigan, to 200 yard shots thru the hardwoods in PA, to 200++ yard shots on small farm fields in WI or AL, many times in low light.
I can still change my order. Did I make the right decision??

I' d never shoot during illegal hours, but often am out of my stand during legal hours due to too little light in the U.P. I hunt very thick conifer/tag alder swamps where even during legal light it is difficult to shoot even 15 to 20 minutes before time is up.
Also, last year in WI, I saw a group of deer at about 200 yards across the field-could barely see with my naked eye. With my Nikon scope I coulds still, barely see. But with my Swarovski binos, I could not only see the deer, but the sex and size of buck, if one had been there. This was also within legal light, but sometimes the distance takes the light out pretty quick.
Sounds like though I probably made the right choice.

I have the 3x10x42-A line on all of my hunting rifles and you certainly don' t need the 50mm.The 42mm is brighter than many 50mm scopes made by other manufacturers(including the 3.5x10x50 varix iii) and is plenty bright for any legal shooting.

Thanks for the comments.
Woodseye didn' t repsond, but I think I know his answer anyways.
Looking forward to my 3-10x42!
I' m going to check out the rifle on Friday, and I' ll play with the trigger a bit, comparing it to my Remington for pull, and if there is some creep, I' ll have them take it out. I' ll get the scope in next weekend, and when I can finally shoot it, I' ll set up at a 100 yards behind the house, shoot it right out of box, and let you guys know how it does.

You did good, the 42mm is the best choice for a 1/2 hour before to 1/2 hour after rifle. The only thing I would buy a 50mm for would be a full night time varmint rifle where there would be almost no light. The 42mm is lighter and will take recoil better and carry a whole lot better. It will also work in lower mounts that prevent you from having to raise your cheek off the stock when shooting.

This is my first " new" rifle, and I am pretty excited about it.
It' s been a great help being able to not only see everyones responses to my questions, but the research I' ve been able to do from everyones comments in the past.
