Here's another question for you all. I need to replace my knives that were lost in the fire. I know I will be buying another Gerber EZ Zip Tool, I loved that thing! As far as the knife goes, I am looking for a high quality edge that will hold, and a comfortable grip. Multiple knives for different tasks are okay. (ie. one for gutting and one for skinning) These blades will be used primarily on whitetails and black bear. I am leaning towards a combo from Knives of Alaska. Does anyone have any experience with these? Or, do you have any suggestion for me?

The most cofortable knife I have usedis the new omni hunter buck knife. It has a really nice grip and the blade is really sharp. I have been cutting bailing twine with mine for 2 months now and I could still shave with it. The one I have actually has a gut hook and I noticed recently it was given the best of the best by field and stream!

I had this same decision about 3 months ago. I went with the Knives of Alaska Alaskan Hunter & the combo sheath. I had a Marbles mini caper that is my favorite caping knife. That goes in the other part of the combo sheath. The Alaskan Hunter is D2 steel & seems to hold a great edge.

I agree with ryanaller completely. I used mine for the first time 3 weeks ago and it was the fastest I have ever field dressed a deer. I cleaned the knife up that night, and a few swipes with the Lansky and she is good to go!

If money was no object I would buy one made out of damascas steel. You can dress 10 deer and not dull the edge.I don't have one.

Who makes knives made out of this, and how much are they? What exactly is damascas steel?

i would get a gerber knife there the only thing that i like to use. one product i like isthe two in one hatchet with a knife build into the handle. all of there blades stay assharpas you want um

Just do a search and you'll find some info. Here's one. Check out the figuring on the steel. As far as I know it's always a part of it. The first one on the folding blade page would be over 500 bucks.

I like the Knives of Alaska as well. I have several. They hold an edge really well. A folder with a blade made of s30v steel will also hold one heck of an edge. Buck makes some as does Spyderco and Benchmade.
