Default Questions on hog population control

I don't know much about hogs so please bear with me. We don't have a hog problem in Michigan. There has been a few escapes from game ranches and any wild hogs that are spotted can be shot on site.

I have read and seen on TV about hog out of control in Southern states but what I have seen on TV for hog control seems a be not enough to keep up with how fast hogs can reproduce.

Can a few guys and a team of dogs taking down a couple of hogs a night really make a dent in the population?

Cage traps make sence, snares are good, but I would be sitting out there at night with a rifle, a suppressor and night vison and just snipe those hogs. It just seems like there is faster ways to knock down the population. Is there?

And what is up with animal control services trying to catch and wrestle huge hogs? Why are they putting themselves in harms way? Wouldn't a 12 gauge shot gun with slugs be a much faster and safer way to take that hog out?

Just looking for some answers. Thanks everyone.

there is no way control feral hogs, a sow can have 3 litters a year, 8-12 pigs per litter, when she is having her 3rd litter, the first litters is havin babies. if unchecked a population of hogs can double every 4 months. in oklahoma after a pig gets over 30 pounds it has basically has no predators but man, coyotes will take a few youg pigs.
hogs become trap shy after a few have been trapped from the sounder, even with dogs and hunting at night it is impossible to curb the hog population.

on most public and some private lands in Oklahoma, there is a no kill policy, hogs must be removed from the premises before they can be killed. otherwise i agree a 12 ga. does wonders. we do catch some hogs alive, more especially large boars for sale to hunting ranches.
the best control or extermination has been by shooting the hogs from helicopter. it is starting to be a common pratice in oklahoma and texas

Huh? Show me.

Yep, the OWDC says we are not allowed to hunt hogs in the WMAs with center fire rifles. Those same idiots at OWDC have no problem hiring some company at $500 per hour to shoot hogs from copters. Go figure.

the public land i was talkin about was more on the school and park side, i trap on several rural schools and the state wants the hogs removed before killed, also on some of the park property they have the same policy. but during deer season hogs may be shot. but as you said { no centerfire weapons } also have 2 propertys that i trap on that the owners want the hogs removed alive, they will not allow any hunting, and they womder why their fields keep gettin tore up

Thanks for the reply.

IME: Farmers who complain the loudest about wild hogs are the ones who will not allow hunting.

So private land owners and goverment is limiting the ability to reduce the hog population effectively?

In the past humans having been good at irradicating animals and causing extintions of certain species. I think if we really wanted to knock down the population we could but I guess some people don't have the guts to do the dirty work. Problem with living in a PC world I guess.

I was justing thinking that hog drives (similar to deer drives) using dogs would be affective to pushing hogs to a determined kill zone. Would this be more affective?

Wow. So what do you do with the 300-800 a year that you catch? Process them or shot em and leave them?

other than cut meat..ig sausage fat and burger cut,i havnt bought meat from a grocery store in 7 years...the deer is like dessert around here.. give some away to my ma, and bro,sis friends...hawg around here is like tellin some kids its liver night,
now n then, we butcher a cow at my buddies dads place, makes fer all kinds of good stuff, it is a full days job fer 4 people..no lunch break.
butcherin up 15 hogs a nite is a pain in the you know where...hands crampin, frustrated, hog kicks ya when ya grab it.....5 dead hogs in a trap will have a pretty good fight sometimes, kickin the crap outta each other.nerves ya know? not ta mention that a pissed off momma pig will charge your arse sometimes, when ya least expect it...sounds like the wind blowin the tree's.. when ya hear that, better have a good out. there will be no mistaken it the 2nd time.
