Default farrel hogs and rabies??

I was hunting in East Texas last year and the landowner told me to beware of pigs blood if I ended up killing one before I went out for the hunt. He handed me a pack of rubber gloves and said they can carry rabies... Anybody ever practice this?

well, i guess if one was foamin at the mouth and actin like ol yeller did, i would prolly leave em lie..but never had a problem so far. you have to cook it through anyways...now deer on the other hand, which i prepare wayyy rare..could be an issue. beef too...
there are also a few diseases hogs and deer can carry that will get ya sick as well...
as for me, proper storage and cooking procedures have kept us safe.

I don't know about rabies, but I know they can carry Brucilosis (sp). We have warnings posted about it at the WMA's. They are OK to eat, but we are warned to wear rubber gloves if we have open cuts on our hands. I don't doubt there's a chance of catching it, but I hunt with a lot of life time hog hunters & we never wear gloves - never heard of somebody we know getting sick. I'm not saying don't wear gloves - I'm just saying we've never seen anybody have issues if they don't.

Anything can have rabies, but I'm sure you would know it.. If it did have rabies, I don't think they would be fit to eat. Like everyone said they can carry other diseases, just any other game animal.

Like richwrench said, feral hogs can carry brucellosis as well as psuedo-rabies. One should be careful if you have open sores or cuts on your hands. I guess I'm the cautious type, I always wear nitrile gloves when I'm cleaning hogs. I buy them at Harbor Freight, but you can get them just about anywhere. Latex would work okay, I just like the nitrile because they're a little sturdier.

Pigs carry all sorts of diseases that can infect humans. This doesn't mean that every pig you come into contact with is infected. Just wear gloves, I'm with der Teufel on nitrile over latex. Rabies and pseudo-rabies are just two diseases to be careful of.

Be careful when dressing a pig wtih any nodules on the inside of the ribs or connective tissue in the lung/chest area. Pigs with tuberculosis often have them. Most bodies of freshwater in the forest here are infected with Leptospirosis spread by feral hogs through urine or feces.

Pigs habit of scavaging dead things, humans included, makes them vectors for many diseases It is also one reason why some cultures consider pigs and pork taboo.
