Question Hog Calls

Have any of you ever used hog squealer calls or grunt calls? If so, what kind of sucess have you had with them?

Never tried any sort of audible call.

For me, it has always been scents and/or spot and stalk.

I've never tried them either but hogs are curious animals just like deer so I thought it might be worth a shot. All the calls I found were about $10 so I think I'll just get one and play around with it. I was just curious if anyone else had any luck with them. Cabela's and a couple other places had favorable reviews of them.

Default Tred Barta

I was watching Tred hunt in Fla a while back and his guide actually snuck up on a piglet, ran back to Tred and began to shake the baby.

It squeeled like crazy and guess what? . . . .

HERE CAME THE ADULTS TO THE RESCUE!

Amazing.

I've tried them in areas where I could hear the pigs close to me and got no response. To me the calls sounded like injured rabbits not piglets. But I have had some success walking up on hogs if I have made a noise or stepped on a stick I grunt like a hog and that seems to cover me.

I've never tried an actual call but I did have a couple hogs come close to my ground blind once and I tried snorting at them. They seemed curious and snorted back a couple times. Another time I was standing at my truck and I heard something in the woods across the street. I snorted a couple times and out walked two small hogs. They stood there looking at me for about 10 seconds and then bolted.

Good advice. I have learned more about hog hunting by just sitting and watching them do their thing instead of shooting the first one that comes out.

Good advice. I'm fairly well versed in their vocalizations, I was just curious if anyone has had any sucess with the calls.

After I posted this I spoke with a good hog huntin' buddy of mine who uses them. He says that it's about as effective as calling deer. Some times they love them, other times you get nothing.
