If you are going to shoot one to eat I would shoot a sow.

I have always been told if you want trophy shoot the big ones BUT if you want one for the freezer shoot around 150lb and cook theyou know whatout of it.

really depends on the hunt.if you shoot a hog that is just feeding along and you put him down on the spot, and he has hot been fightning and chasing sows in heat then he will be pretty good.
mostare not good if mad and chased with dogs and bayed up for the shot. eating hogs are the smaler ones,100 to 150 lbs. are the best. I have had good sows, gilts , or bars that go much more(250 to 300)thatare good. shoot the big boys foe trophy heads and the smaller ones to eat. |

I agree with Treeclimber if you want one to eat shoot a smaller one. Though we've eaten boars up to 550 lbs and they tasted fine. The trick is to make sure they are not riled up when they are shot. If they have been run by dogs, fighting, or anything that gets their adrenaline up they can get a strong taste. Even when we trap them we sneak up on them and shoot them before they know we are there that way they don't get their adrenaline flowing.

I prefer 75-100 pound Gilt's (young females).
A 330+ hog is a Job!;) |
