Rebel, if I were going to put up with the recoil of a 30-378 might as well add a lot more thump on the recieving end and do it with a 250 grain bullet. Thats a guaranteed boulder buster if there ever was one.

I was on www.chuckhawks.com and the 12 gauge with 3' kicks 54ft pounds so if you can handle that you can handle the .30-378

I have the impression you're looking for something that isn't found in every gun cabinet in country and the orginal post states that it needs to be able to take all NA game so why not get a 338 Ultra or 358 Norma.

drfatguy a 300 ultra will not do anything more than a 300wby. in factory rounds the weatherby actually out performs the ultra and the people i've seen at the range with reloads aren't getting any better than i do with my 300 wby.

I own two 300ultramags and have owned a 300wby and loaded for a second one.The ultramags produce about 100fps more with 180gr handloads. The ultramag factory loads are very mild so I would not bother with any ultramag if I didn't reload. On the other hand the weatherby factory loads are very hot and I was only able to reload the fired cases once or twice afterward before the primer pockets were too loose to properly hold a primer.

Every 30-378 have either fired or been around have had factory muzzlebrakes, and have been extremely friendly to the shooter. In all fairness tho, it's the only 'rifle' I've ever seen that had a concussion ring when fired. EXTREMELY LOUD! It's a trip to stand back and watch from behind!

Barbs,
If I didn't get this gun I would get the WBY 300 accumark. BUT this gun is amazing. Accurate, light on recoil with the brake. I would compare it to a 243. Without a brake 12 ga 3 inch slugs. but who feels a recoil at a big bull 400 yards away. I have put 60 rounds through mine and I would have no ethical dilema pulling the trigger with a good field rest (bi pod, rocks, pack, tree branch, or others.) Of those 60 ten were without a brake. After I shot it without the brake i had not developed a flinch. Go for the BIG DOG put these 300 win mag and RUM and WSM cry a$$es in their place.
