whats the difference between a single action and double action revolver?

The single action has to be cocked manually before it can be fired. The double action will fire without being cocked first. The trigger pull on the double action will be longer and not as easy to pull. The double action can be cocked first if you wish and will shoot more accuratly for most people in that manner. The Ruger Blackhawk is a single action. The Redhawk is a double action.

Very simple.Single action means you must pull the hammer back (cock it) then squeeze the trigger to fire it.
Double action means you can fire it as discribed above or you can just squeeze the trigger and it will bring the hammer back then fall to fire.For target shooting most shoot Single action.For self defense D/A,is quicker and prefered for self defense.Squeezing the trigger on a D/A has a heavier trigger pull,then does a Single Action.
