Default Another "which one" - .270 or .300 wsm

I am lucky to own two nice rifles - Browning A-Bolt .270 win, and Winchester 70 Ulti Shadow .300 wsm. Both stainless with plastic stock and both in equally great shape.

I have decided that I need only one of these calibers, and learn it well. Their purposes are not different enough.

I am going to invest in a custom stock to fit my shoulder and grip. I have tried one and it is amazing. Problem is I don't know which one to sell and which to put the new stock on. 300 wsm is fun but does kick and might still be a novelty. .270 is classic and a good shooter. I have taken antelope, deer, and elk with both, at 40 to 340 yards, but the results are no different. Same size holes, same dead animal. All my hunting is western spot and stalk.

For the money I need to invest, I want to be sure to put it into the best rifle that I can own and then pass down.

Do you think .300 wsm is here to stay? Conversely, do you think .270 win is going to become a relic or remain a classic?

Bottom line, which would you invest in?

Sorry if you're tired of comparison threads. I like reading your comments.

Out of the box the Browning is the more accurate rifle but the Winchester will be the easiest to customize. The caliber 300 wsm is more versatile then the 270 win mag especially if really big game is on the menu.

The 300WSM is probably here to stay. BUT, the 270Win. is a classic, and if memory serves correctly, it has been in the top five for sales for well over thirty years.
THE 270Win. IS HERE TO STAY - FOR A LONG LONG TIME!
(As is the 30-06, 30-30, 308Win., and 7mmRem.Mag.)

i would choose the .300wsm. i do believe the .270 is a legend and will continue to be, but i also think the .300wsm is here to stay! it will be a legend one day too. as for the recoil, have you thought about putting a muzzle break on your wsm? my dad had one put on his .300 winmag and its like shooting a .22, a lot louder though. since your taking the time and money to upgrade your stock, go ahead and put the muzzle break on the .300wsm. gl

I shot a Ruger M77 Ultralite 270 for 19 years and killed a "mountain" of deer and hogs with it, but the recoil was quite abusive to my shoulder. Hunting was fine, but I dreaded range time and began to flinch. A couple of years ago, I decided to try an Encore. I took the custom route with my barrel and stock coming from Virgin Valley and a trigger job from Mike Bellm. I was unsure what caliber to choose, so I let Steve at VVG talk me into 300 WSM. I have ABSOLUTELY no regrets.

I have both calibers you mention. I use the 300wsm only for elk, and the 270 for everything else. If I had to sell one, it would be the 300wsm.

I would keep the 270 hands down.

If elk or moose are in the picture the 300wsm is certainly a better choice.

I really appreciate all the answers. Every one of you helped me with your advice. As you can see, however, collectively I'm where I started. As I expected.

I liked all your comments. Thanks

I have decided to keep the 270.

No, wait. The 300 wsm. Er, I meant the 270. Well, the .300 wsm is fun. No, definitely the .270.

Unless I keep the .300.

I think I need something bad to happen to me so I have more important things to worry about.

No, no, I didn't really mean it, God. The .270 it is. Or the .300

THANKS
