I sold my 300 a few years ago...the recoil was brutal and not fun to shoot. I picked up a Tikka whitetail hunter in 7mag and really like it...still kicks but not as bad. They are both flat shooters and have 2000-2200 ft lbs of energy at 300 yards which is obviously a big dose of medicine for an elk. Slight edge to the 300.....not worth the pounding, however, you being a Marine probably won't notice the difference. Regards, Rick.

I can't feel a lick of difference in recoil between the 7 Mag and 300 Win Mag. I would go for the 300 Win Mag. Much more versitile.

I agree with BigCountry, They are so close together it's a toss up. I hunted with a .300 and my best friend hunts with a 7mm and i would never hesitate to use his 7mm for anything i would use my .300 on.

After using a .338 for many years and many dead moose I switched to a 7 mag and never looked back. Extremely versatile and easy to shoot WELL !

I couldnt agree more, any difference in recoil between these two has got to be rifle specific. I have shot allcamo's 300 winny, and I own two 7mm rem's and i cant tell a difference! Of course maybe some of you arent quite the physical specimen I am!!! (6'3" 210 lbs of pure power)

Boy oh Boy if that don't top them all...the 7rem mag is a *****cat and doesn't have magnum recoil...the 300 win mag is where recoil starts.

go w/ the 300 mag. I have a 300win. mag. my brother a 7rem. mag. they are both bonafide elk calibers, but the 300 is a step up in power, itll do the same things as the 7mag except do it w/ a bigger bullet. bigger animals demand bigger bullets, the 300 does that over the 7mag(which is still a good elk caliber, just not the best in this case). Good luck.

I'll go along with that one. I've shot some 30-06's that kicked as hard or harder than some 300's due to stock design. Either the 7mm or the 300 will don anything you'll ask of them. I've hunted with them both.
