I'm wondering if I should get a new 270wsm or a 30-06 because the 270wsm is faster and better for long shots and I looked into all the velocity speed and trajectory and the 270wsm seemed to be better I'm just wondering wut u guys think before I buy one.

My opinion is the 30.06. Why? cuz you can get ammo for it anywhere, it's cheap, its more gun then you would ever need for most NA game. The bullet grains are all over the place from 90 up to 220. To me its the perfect gun for one two gun owner. Not saying you are, but it's really versital.

Won't make a bit of difference to a deer, moose or even elk which one you get. I know i have such great luck reloading the WSM line however. Its hard to me to make it shoot bad. Bullistically neither walk off and leave the other up to sensible hunting ranges.

I disagree. What's the biggest bullet you can load in the .270 WSM, 150 grains? Maybe 160? I'd rather shoot a bull elk or moose with a 180 or 200 grain bullet from an -06 than a 150 or 160 grainer from a .270 WSM. KE be damned! I want a bigger hole and assured penetration!

I guess you can tell I am an -06 fan. A lot of riflemen dislike the .30-06 since it's so, so, well...EVERYBODY has an -06! There's no panache to having a rifle that shoots such a plebian cartridge. Or, why have a good, general-purpose cartridge when you can have cartridges specifically tailored to the game in question?

I really can't find fault with the last part, but I do put a lot of faith in the old adage, "Beware the man with one rifle; he probably knows how to shoot it!" You can hunt just about any game in North America, with confidence, with a .30-06 Springfield. From 110-125 grain bullets for varmints, 150-165 grainers for deer, pronghorns, sheep and caribou, 180 grain bullets for black bear, mountain goat and elk, and 200 or 220 grain slugs for big bull elk, moose or big bears. Maybe not perfect for all, but effective for all within it's limitations. And, as Semi stated, you can purchase factory ammunition (if needed or solely relied on) anywhere, from South Africa, to Alaska, to Luxembourg. It is an easy cartridge to handload for, and there are probably more components available for handloading -06's than any other cartridge in history.

Now, I wouldn't mind owning a .270 WSM. I bet they are a lot of fun to shoot and load for, and would be just about perfect for deer, sheep and like-sized game. But I would prefer (and this is my preference only) a .30 caliber for elk or moose, and certainly for big bears. In fact, gimme a .338 or .375 for big bears! With an -06 and a .375, there isn't an animal in the world you could not kill.

The '06 is a very versatile round when it comes to bullet selection - I like it and use it. These days, if I were buying a new rifle I'd take a hard look at the 30 caliber short mags. Short actions are a little lighter, and there have been hunts when carrying my Sako '06 gets very tiring. If the choice is limited to the 270 WSM vs. the 30-06, I'd have to go with the 30-06.

I have shot moose with a 150gr 308win, 200gr a-frame 300RUM, and 180gr 30-06. All fell down and went boom. I have witnessed moose taken down with a 270 150gr. And that same day a woodland caribou. All fell down and went boom.

One thing I learned in Newfoundland, its not so important the gun or the grain, as how good shape you are in. Better shape more land you can cover.

A trip to northern Newfoundland, I worked and worked all year finding the perfect load. I fell down off a hill on my scope and knocked my scope out bad. Well, I borrowed the cooks gun and took a cow next day. It was a 308win. That day I learned I should have put alot more effort into stair climbers and taking offhand shots.
