Default Shotgun Forcing Cone

I want a better pattern at 40 yards and maybe 50 yards with my 870 turkey gun. Will a forcing cone change make much difference in turkey guns? Whats involved, just reaming out some more material near the chamber to lengthen the cone? My gunsmith said he will do the job for $80 dollars.

If its so good, why don't they do it at the factory?

Lengthening the forcing cones and getting an overbored (larger inside diameter than regulation .729 for 12g) are the two most common barrel features used to get better groups. This assumes you've already tried several different chokes.

Lengthening the forcing cones supposedly reduces recoil quite a bit. The idea behind better groups likely comes from the idea that a more gradual forcing cone with deform the shot less. As to just how affect these things are.....everyone has their opinion. For $80 dollars I would have it done in hopes that a little recoil reduction and a little better groups will result.

I can't get consistent 20 shot hit at 50 yards. Thats what I am looking for. Thinking of moving to hevishot.

Shooting a 870 express. Got a remington turkey choke with 665" of constriction. Thinking of getting a hevishot tube .675". Just not sure if a cheaper 870 is good to be doing alot of gunsmithing on. I think I gave 200 for it when on sale. I traded my 1187 turkey gun for a duck gun, so I figured I would work on this 870 this year. I got some nice tri-vis sights for it.

Holy cow look at these shot counts at 50 yards. If I could match this, I would be a happy man.

The only shotgun I have ever seen to advertise the forcing cone lengthen is the Beretta Xtrema........ I had the cone lengthen on my 301 Beretta shotgun for steel shot. I really can’t say if it patterned any better and I haven’t noticed any difference in the recoil. I only use this gun for migratory game birds so I can’t comment for turkey hunting. Good Luck....

Well, thanks for the replys. Steel shot already patterns quite well. Still very much undecided on what to do.

Have you considered a Rhino choke and Nitro ammo from Nitro Ammo Company? I use the Rhino choke and Nitro company hevishot and it is amazing. If you go to their website they do not recommend lengthening the forcing cone.

Here is a link if you don't already know it: www.nitrocompany.com

They are definately proud of their products! I have yet to see a gun that did not dramatically improve after the Rhino and nitro combo. I think you would be impressed.
