RE: 6.5x284 Who has one?

Of course most of the stuff out there one reads concerns long range shooting with this cartridge. A lot of shooters say it is too much trouble just use a 260 or 6.5x55. I just don't understand their complaints. Brass is readily available, dies are available , Norma makes brass for it . My gunsmith is currently building one and has built scores of them and put it on a recommended list for me as well as a few other cartridges.

But they just started putting out brass in numbers. When I contiplated building one, you made your own.

I think its a nice round. But alot out there, just as good. 6mmPPC, or BR. Norma making brass means alot however.

I would do it, if I was you. Make a darn good deer gun.

I don't Know BC the rounds you mentioned may not be in the same league. I mean this thing has a sectional density of a 30 caliber 190 grain bullet and comes out of the muzzle at 3000. I think it would make a great all around gun medium or large game. I just have some questions about barrel length , action length and rate of twist. There is also a question of how well it feeds that fat 284 case and whether any mods will have to be made to the Remington reciever.

A few years ago, alot of guys helped me with some questions. I can dig up the emails. It was stickly for BR. So feeding was a non issue. I think it was guys from extreameaccuracy webpage.

I'm suprised the .284 winchester case hasn't caught on and become more popular. It has a nearly identical case capacity as a 30-06 but is much shorter. I would want a 6.5x284 built also, but I don't have anywhere to shoot it to really take advantage of its ballistics.

Apparently someone, whom doesn,t know anything about them i guess. I gather you don,t have one, what a pitty you haven,t had the pleasure of shooting one,at paper or game. Its really a shame,i,m sure all your weapons are of the finest grade and calibers. vangunsmith
I have shot every 6.5mm from the Winchester Magnum on down, and this one is virtually a carbon copy of the Remington Mag. Too long for a short action and why bother if you have a long one. I like the middle sized ones best say from the .256 Newton to the .260 Remington. The little'r ones are just a bit too moderate for me. You pays your money and makes your choice but it ain't the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I am kinda with you on this. The ones i have shot have been great performers, but can't figure out why its been pushed to the top of the benchrest calibers these days.

RE: 6.5x284 Who has one?

The 6.5x284 has been a wildcat cartridge for a long time. It was designed for hunting, and bench rest competition. It was created to take the place of the 6.5-06.With less recoil it attatined a great following. Its been used for years by bench rest shooters for its great accuracy. Its a great hunting cartridge as well. here are some stats. 100gr bullets over 3600fps,120gr bullet>3300fps>,139gr bullet 3250fps,140gr at 3120fps,160gr bullet over 2800fps. In 1999 norma came out with a version of this cartridge,as well another version called the 6.5/284 Reindeer by Dr. EL Eichorn. I highly recommend this cartridge to anyone who is interested in a flat shooter and game getter. Also these bench rest shooters were of the type shooting at 1000yds. Hope i helped some. vangunsmith

139gr bullet 3250fps,140gr at 3120fps,
Is that supposed to be a 129 grain bullet at 3250?

Like I said you are payin' for your own barrels and powder, feel free to burn 'em up as fast as you want, but you still need a long action to get the most out of the .284 case, just like the 6.5 Rem Mag. Furthermore since it takes the .264 Win. Mag. 26" of barrel to achieve 3150 fps with a 140 grain bullet I suspect that not EVERY 6.5-.284 can reach those velocities.

Its built on a 98 mauser, and if you look in POAckleys book,Im sure you heard of him?Volume 11,page 161 youll find the load you were talkling about. 139 gr bullet. 55grs of 4350 powder== 3250 fps velocity.
