Totoe,
Natchez Shooters Supply would be a good place to start. They are competitive on their prices. Either scope you mentioned would work fine. I haven't priced scopes in awhile, I'm thinking there is a big price jump from the 3-9's to the 4-12's.

Look at the prices on www.premierreticles.com, the last one I got from them was a vx III 3.5x10x42 and I think it was 425$ If you ever do any long range shooting, they will put extra crosshairs and or dots in for 65$ plus 10$ each for additional dots or xhairs if I remember right.

TOTOE...Bass Pro Shop has the Leupold VX-1 in 2-7x for $179. (The 3-9 is $200, and the 4-12 is $250) If where you hunt is like where I hunt in WV, the 2-7X is plenty.

I have used a straight 6X for years and it has done well. This year I am putting a 4X Unertl on my 270 for deer season. I'm going to shoot it this weekend.

For shooting deer and larger game at ranges up to 300 yards, a 1.5X-5X or 2X-7X has PLENTY of magnification!!!

Keep yore powder dry!!
