RE: 270wsm or 270win?
A few months ago I shot two featherwieghts. One a 270win, the other a 270WSM. I definately knew I was shooting different guns. Alot of varibles, however. The 270win was my handload of 130gr gameking and 45gr of 4064. A light combo really. The WSM was winchester powerpoints I believe.
I love the WSM lineup. I haven't loaded for the 270WSM but if its anything easy to load like the 300WSM, then it has a thumbs up for me. If you a guy that wants to shoot deer with 130gr bullets, then no use to get a WSM. But if you want simular flattness but with 150gr bullets for bigger game, the WSM might strike your fancy. Nothing earthshattering however in the difference in bullistics. |
RE: 270wsm or 270win?
Lets let the numbers do the talking...these are all Winchester numbers not mine. 130 gr 270=3050fps; 130gr 270WSM=3275fps...140 gr 270=2920 fps; 140gr 270WSM=3125 fps....150gr 270=2850 fps; 150gr 270WSM=3150 fps. Let's see here, 270WSM shoots a 150gr bullet 100fps faster than a 270 shoots a 130gr bullet. At 300 yards that results in nearly 25% more energy. This new cartridge out performs a 30'06 in the 150 gr bullet range. I think I'm going to buy one!!!!! Jack O'Conner would roll over in his grave. I'm really suprised Winchester hasn't done this to the .243. The other bonus I see is the short action means less weight and faster cycling. It's taken 78 years, but it's obvious the 270 has been put on steroids. Regards to all, Rick.

RE: 270wsm or 270win?
I just used the Winchester factory numbers for factory ammo not reloads. I'm confident these numbers represent a decent picture of what to expect out of these 2 calibers across the board. Here is the link: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articl...48/ai_85472059 Regards, Rick.

RE: 270wsm or 270win?
The funny thing is I never needed a 270wsm. But I guess it's because I reload. When the short mag come out boasting a 130gr bullet at 3275 I was not impressed. I've been loading a 130gr bullet traveling 3288fps since 1985 out of just a regular ole 270win. Short mags are new and they shine for those that don't reload. But they are what they are babies in the field. In 80yrs I would be the 270win is still going strong when the others have worn out their luster. I'm no fan of short mags they are a fad with no great improvement. Just something new to sell year after year. This year is will be the 325WSM. I bet those that shoot a 338mag or a 8mm mag are laughing all the way.

RE: 270wsm or 270win?
I've been loading a 130gr bullet traveling 3288fps since 1985 Absolutely, if you got a good 270win, no need for a WSM. But for those like me who loves short actions, and maybe a tad more umph, its a great caliber. |
RE: 270wsm or 270win?
Would you be so kind as to post the receipe for your 130gr 3288fps load? What rifle and barrel length are you using to achieve these numbers? Thanks and regards, Rick

RE: 270wsm or 270win?
Just placed my order for 270WSM. Wanted, not necessarily needed a flatter shooting rifle than what I already have. (.308 BLR and 6.5 x 55 mauser). I hunt primarily Whiteltail during the rifle season, unless I haven't tagged out with my bow then I'll use the rifles for Elk as well. For that reason I went with the 270WSM as I have the option to push a heavier bullet a little faster. Since I handload, factory limitations, all though there aren't much anymore is not a factor.
