If I buy a NEF Handi Rifle in 223, can I buy a 12ga barrel to attach also?

If its a newer one they will accept anything but 10 GA. This includes their muzzle loader barrel. If you look at one jot down the serial number and call H&R customer service . They can tell you by the number what all it will accept. I think even the older ones will take the shotgun barrels. To find out more go to hr1871.com and click on barrel accessory program.

If you buy a rifle ,both rifle and shotgun (except for 10 gau and 12 Gau Ultra slug barrel ) barrels can be fitted to the frame.

(Last time I checked) If you buy a shot gun (12 gau or smaller) then you can only have shotgun barrels fitted to the frame

If you buy a 10 gau or a 12 gau Ultra slug gun then only 12 gau ultra slug barrels or 10 gau barrels can be fitted to the frame

I can't asnwer your question, but keep in mind, I think your "frame" has to be sent back to the factory and have it "fitted" in order to switch barrels. I don't know much about NEF's so I may be wrong. Some people see "interchangeability" and think they're like T/C's where you can exchange barrels yourself. Am I wrong on this?

NEF or H&R (same gun ,same manufactior ,just different name) used to sell barrels just like TC dose now .
I have no idea why they stoped buy they did .

The frame must be sent in to have the barrels "fitted".

Get a serial # and call NEF and they can answer your question. But I am pretty sure you can get the 12 guage and below fitted to any rifle frame.

T/C Fan - You can interchange the barrels yourself, its just NEF requires the action in their posession in order to headspace the barrel correctly. Once that is done, you can swap barrels as you wish.

That makes no sence to me what so ever. It is simply a matter of droping the go and no-go gagues. The go must sit below flush and the no go must sit above flush with the breech.

I'm not saying your wrong Charlie but why in the world would they need it to check headspace. The frame isn't needed at all. Did they give you a reason for this?

I could see them having to fit the barrel to some of the parts in the frame to get a good lock up.

When I talked to a Rep. he said H&R wanted to make sure that their barrel were not being put on other companys frames ( Rossi)and they wanted to make sure that rifle barrels were not going on shotgun frames (something about firing pin diamiter or clearance)

That makes a little more sense.
