I am thinking about having my savage 308 rebarreled. One of my options is the 260 Rem. This gun is mainly used for deer hunting in Louisiana & Alabama. There are a few shots over 300 yds, but the majority are under 200 yds. What will I be giving up or gaining by going with the 260?

bates,I wouldnt do it because your 308 will handle anything you want to do with it.It should be able to handle 300 yard shots and has a wider selection of ammo. Not to mention the cost to rebarrel your rifle.I dont think you would be gaining anything but a bill to your gun smith

I cant see it being worth your while because a .260 doesn't give you more power and at 200 yards the most the difference would be is 2 inches which is hardly noticeable when in the field

If your current .308 barrel is in good condition and is shooting well.........then why are you even considering changing it??
If, however, the barrel is shot out or the throat is eroded to the poiont you are going to swap it out,.... then go for whatever caliber you want!
The .260 is a fine caliber, but so is the .308.
If your current barrel is good....leave it alone and spend your money on a good used rifle in 6.5 x 55 (near identical to the .260 and plenty of ammo on the shelves) ........then you'll have both!!!

I'm usually a big .308Win fan but the .260 ain't bad. I don't know what action length your Savage is, I think they can vary depending on model??? However rebarreling it for another caliber if it's shot-out or if you just want something different is up to you. 8mm/06 had a good idea though in suggesting the 6.5x55, if not in a different gun how about rebarreling it for that?<img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

I can only assume that you're considering this caliber change because of a shot out barrel or some other problem. From all I've heard, the .308 is great for most game in North America and few people are disappointed in it's performance.
With regard to your desire to consider the .260 Remington, I think you'll be very happy with this caliber if used for the hunting you mentioned. I hunt in southwest Alabama and I've had fantastic results on whitetail using 120gr. Ballistic Tips from 80-200 yds. and I love the flat shooting characteristics of the round. Never had a deer take more than 3 steps after being hit so don't let people tell you that the .260 "ain't enough gun".
Best of luck with your choice & safe hunting to you.

Thanks for the opinions. The barrel is not shot out and shoots good. I was just thinking about the 260. I guess I will just wait and look for a rifle in 260 or 6.5X55. Thanks again.
