Most factory synthetic stocks have a strip of wood that the studs will screw into. If not you can get the Uncle Mikes installation kit and it will have all the information and tools needed to properly drill, counterbore, and install the stud.
If your rifle does not have the strip of wood you will need to get the machined screw studd with the collar that is glass bedded into the inside of the stock.

Tom , yes it does have one on it but the back of the bipod digs into my shoulder when i am walking. but it would not do this if there was another stud right behind the bipod. it realy doesnt bather me too much with a heavy jacket on but with out a jacket it doesnt take long for it to start digging in.

I have installed studs in syn. stocks by drilling a hole just smaller than needed for full thread ingagement.
I counter sink the top of the hole a little.
I use wax on the screw threads for ease of installation.
If the screw sticks into the barrel chanel ,measure how much to remove off the screw .
Take screw out grind off excess and replace
