We have a .223 and it is a good little gun. The only problem has been it sticks on ejection every once in awhile. It happens about once every 200 rounds or so. A friend of mine just bought his son one in .243 for christmas and we shot it this weekend and it is fun to play w/.

How is the recoil on the .243? I know they don't kick much, but how is it in such a small gun? I was thinking of an NEF in .243 as a deer rifle for my son and as a varmit rifle for myself. My son is 10, but is a "big kid" but tends to be recoil sensitive.

you should get a handi-rifle if given the oportunity

Get him one of the sholder shields and you should be ok. I have 2 sons one will shoot the youth model .243 all day the other thinks it was too much. Where you said he is sensitive I'd buy the precaution.

I just came home with one, got a .22 Hornet. The scope base would not mount up none of the holes lined up and the hammer extension doesnt fit. I dont know what went wrong maybe they put the wrong set in the box. will let you know in a couple of days how it shoots. i drilled the base where it needed to be and mounted it up with a scope, but with out the hammer extension it's kinda a pain.
