I think a .270,.280, 7mm Mag, 270WSM would all be good, but don't know how far you're talking. Rifle wise, whatever feels good and fits you and your budget

look at savage rifles. A good caliber is 7mm-08.. great for deer and has plenty of range.

It would be hard to beat the 270 Win.. I have had mine sice I was a kid, and still love it.
Best Deer rifle I have ever owned. I have a 7mm mag., 308, 270, 338 RUM, 243, 17 HMR, a coouple of 22 mags, shot guns, and looking into buying one of the new 204 Rugers. I have a couple of other rifles but my wife is under the impression that they belong to her!!!!

To me , I still use my 270 every chance I get on my deer hunts.

Hope it helps.

The skill of the shooter has much more to do with placing bullets at longer range than the cartridge. No matter what cartridge you use,it takes a great deal of shooting to develop good shooting skills and to learn the trajectory of your gun and load.Buying a long range gun does not make you a long range shooter. That being said the 25-06,270,280 and 7mm-08 are all good choices.

If you truely want a long distance deer rifle, I'd look at either a 7mm Mag. or 300 Mag. That goes for all the "short mags", "ultra mags", etc. as well.

depends on how far ur talking about, for long range shooting i use a 300 win mag, people say its to much for deer, i dont see whats so bad about overkill.

They're not the one's who have to gut 'em after a 40 yard shot with that thing so why should they complain...hehe!

I'm with 1dahunter.... .50cal BMG! Just make sure the hill behind the deer is thick enough to stop that sucker!

No, seriously, if it kills it and you can shoot it I don't see what's so bad about overkill either. On the other hand if you develope a bad case of "magnum flinch" then you should rethink you're caliber.
