Which caliber would you pick?

Which of these calibers would you choose to shoot out of a deer/hog rifle for the southeast?

.270
.30-06
.308
7mm08
.270 wsm
7mm

RE: Which caliber would you pick?

I personally would choose the .270. I've taken many deer with my .270, the longest shot at 385 yards. The 7mm-08 Remington Mountain Rifle is also a viable option shooting fairly flat out to 300 yds. and easily handles in the brush or woods.

What type of hunting situations will you encounter? Food plots with long shots, hardwoods hunting?

All will work, it depends on what you really want. You may also want to factor in ammo availablity in your area if buy OTC, Recoil, shooting distance and maybe even future hunting requirements to help narrow the field somewhat. I don't think either would have trouble taking the game mentioned at reasonable distances.

Southeast? 7mm-08 Rem or 308 Win in a short handy rifle light a Ruger Compact.

7mm-08 with no hesitation.

Take the 308Win. or 30-06. The 7mm-08 is good, but selection of factory ammo not as
great. Pick a fairly light, handy rifle/carbine such as Ruger Ultra-Light or RSI model, or
the Remington mod. 7.

I'd also go with the 308. Low recoil, factory loads are plentiful and easy to find. If you're wanting a bolt, go with the Ruger MK II Compact or Rem model 7. If you're not set on a bolt, go with the T/C Encore or G2. If you decide to go after bigger game, its just a matter of getting another barrel instead of shelling out big cash for a whole new rifle.

Borty, My favorite is the 308. This is one, if not the most accurate round for big game that I have ever used. The energy and stopping power of this 30 caliber round is sufficent for just about any big game in the US. Match the bullet to the situation and you have a excellent combination.
Good Hunting...;)

None of the above! For only deer and hogs my choice would be the 25.06:D

That is a valid point, however there is not a deer or hog in the southeast that can withstand a hit from a 140 grain Nosler Partition. Federal loads them in their premium line for the 7mm-08 Rem. In a light rifle the 7mm-08 Rem has less recoil than a 308 Win. If you don't believe me get yourself a torn rotator cuff and try them both. I love the 308 Win and own two of them, but I constantly see people on this board selling the 7mm-08 Rem short.

but success

If your hunting the southeast you need something to reach out across a right of way, large field. I would say the top 3 7REm mag,270wsm or 270win. I hunt an area in Alabama where 300 yard + shots are always a possibility and longer if you want.

30-06 or .270

Also a fan of the 25.06 but any of the mentioned calibers will do the trick. If you think that there is a possibility that you may what to hunt something bigger(ie:moose or elk) in the future than I would pick either the .308 or 30.06. Also if you are in some out of the way area(oops I forgot my ammo or can't believe I missed all 20 times) some of the mentioned calibers may be hard to find.

Best Wishes

Well I guess I will stick with my browning micro medallion in 7mm08
unless it is nasty and try the ruger all weather .30-06, I just needed a few opinions thanks

the 30-06 or 7rem mag. plentiful ammo, tons of factory loads, tons of bullets, weights, ect..... then if you want to go after some bigger game down the road your good to go.

I would go with the .270 and reload so some light 130 grain loads for deer!

Can I ask a stupid question?

How come nobody is mentioning the classic, tried and true, 30-30 winchester loads for deer hunting?

I have a nice Marlin 30-30 w/Simmons scope and it's dialed in perfectly to 100 yards. [8D]

Well, if your asking what "I" would choose, it would be all of them, plus a few others. The only problem I have is deciding which "one" gets to go on the trip this year...

Actually don't have the 7mm08, but really like the 7X57. Don't have the 270WSM, and do not anticipate getting one.

If you get them all, you will have your greatest available selection of factory loaded ammo, and all kinds of things to do at the reloading bench.

The Southeast is more built up, so I find noise is a factor - if you don't want people complaining about your hunting. Any of the ones you listed should be fine though.

I'll put in another vote for the .270! A nice 130 gr load for deer as someone else sugjested. A nice light recoiling wild cat version of the .30-06!

7mm08 works great;)

RE: Which caliber would you pick?

I personally would have to choose .270. That caliber has and extremely flat trajectory, sure the 7mm would be flatter but where I hunt the longest shot I have ever had the oportunity to take was between 175 and 200 yards. For whitetail 7mm is a little much, a well placed shot w/ a 22lr will put a deer down (They used to allow you to hunt with a .22 in Wisconsin). For me, being an unexperienced shooter, I shoot guns with less kick better, the large calibers will make me flinch.

All the more reason for the 7mm08!

I love my .270 but then again it is my first rifle and I'm very comfortable with it. Whatever your comfortable with.

.308 is a nice round and would do the job with plenty of ammo choices.

RE: Which caliber would you pick?

Of those listed the 7mm-08 is my pick for Southeastern whitetails. Mild recoil yet a relatively flat shooting round and hot death on deer. A 140 grain bullet from a 7mm-08 is close to perfect for southern whitetails. An excellent caliber whose popularity is growing in leaps and bounds mostly because of dads who originally buy it for their kids then end up using it as much or more than their kids.

RE: Which caliber would you pick?

All would work fine but if I had to pick I go for the 308 win!
