A good pump action like an 870 Rem. or Ithaca M37 type with a fixed, rifled barrel and a low-power scope, using Winchester Partition Gold sabot slugs. Using this round, a 20 Ga. is as good as a 12Ga.

I'll Agree with eldeguello,on the shotguns and sabot slugs. But for me I perfer light weight ,I like my NEF 20 gauge rifled barrel with a 6x scope, and winchester sabot slugs.

SingleShot.

F4YG has a good point. You probably have an idea of which action to use, and which gauge. Me, I use an older (pre-1978) Remington 1100 12 gauge, which I'm going to get a fully-rifled barrel for in the next couple of weeks. I seem to think that it would be a heluva brush gun, for where I hunt in NY's Northern Zone.

For a pump go with a 870 with a cantilever scope mount with a GOOD scope. You need a good scope that can take the pounding that the slug delievers. You could go high class and get a costum slug gun. There are a few companies that make special barrels for shooting slugs or just buy the whole gun costumized (barrel, action, trigger all upgraded).
I have a factory 870 with the cantilever scope barrel 20" fully rifled. shoots great. Use the Lightfield slugs. At 100yds I can touch all three shots. 50yds same hole.
Rem also has the new "super slug" barrel. 23" and larger diameter.

These are all great Ideas. I am leaning towards the pump action in a 20 gauge. What's the better of rem 870,win 1300,ithica deerslayerII or mossberg 500?

Yes Singleshot, I like single shots also. I wonder if a Ruger No. 1 could be converted to 20 gauge to shoot slugs?? Probably not, but it would make a great deer gun so converted!! I have a TCR single shot rifle which used to have a 12 Ga. rifled barrel available, but they quit making barrels for it!!
