RE: New deer gun
Herman,
The rifled chokes don't seem to work very well. Basically it's trying to spin the slug in about 3-4" compared to 20" or so with a fully rifled barrel. If you want to try slugs, use the modified choke, and the Fosters-style slugs. Not the newer sabot slugs. The Fosters slugs are rifled themselves and create enough spin in a smooth bore to be accurate enough out to 75-100 yards.
My personal slug gun is a Rem 870 smoothbore, modified fixed choke, Tasco WC2-7x32 mounted on a B-Square mount. My gun seems to like Winchester Super X 1oz slugs.

Hey Denny,
Federal also makes a 20ga sabot with a barnes expander copper slug. Enjoy the Deer Slayer. It's a nice handling shotgun, very rifle like, and I love the bottom ejection on it too.

I'd go with a pump, either a rem 870, or something from benelli. Benelli just came out with a new slug gun, so you might look into that, but if you want a do-all, I'd get one with a smoothbore, then buy a new rifled barrel, and shoot sabot slugs. I'd go with a pump over an auto, just cuz of the more solid action, and have you ever shot 3" mag slugs in semi auto, it isn't too comfortable. Personally, I'd go with a 12, over a 20, cuz I wouldn't feel safe sending a 20 slug out after a mulie, or a big whitetail, especially after elk or moose.
Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!!

Hey SingleShot in Ohio, you say you have an NEF single with a scope??
Are you talking about one of those H&R/NEF 12ga. blanks bored out to a 20ga , with the scope base already mounted on the barrel? I'm asking because I have talked with the people at NEF about their rifled slug barrels you can buy for their Handi-rifles, and they said those barrels werent heavy enough to drill and tap. Just wondered what you had come up with?
