third opening on remington 11-87 ejection port

The first and biggest hole is for the shell to coem out of, the second slit is for the bolt handle, the third slit if for?????

You didn't say if this is the SuperMag, could it possibly be a pressure release valve for the 3 1/2" loads? Check out www.remington.com for more details?
