RE: 7mm Rem Mag. Out of favor?

I think if you look hard enough sales of "traditional" cartridges are suffering from the short mag fad. I was in Bass Pro the other day and about all they had on the racks were some sort of short mag. I am sure whenever the shiny marketing bullcrap wears off the 7mm Rem Mag, 270 Win and 30-06 will still be on top of ammo and reloading sales.

I frequently use a 7mm magnum, but in built up areas I find it too noisy. My friends use a variety of familiar calibers on whitetails, mulies, moose - and I have never seen an animal killed with one of the .270-.280-.30 bolt action calibers that would not have been just as dead if shot by another. But then again, no one I know shoots extreme ranges and they usually will pass up shots at game running from them. Some people who pay lots of money for short guided hunts don't like coming home empty handed and may take marginal shots - they think they need the extra bit a big magnum can provide, I suppose.

Someday the dust will settle and we'll see these new calibers coming in on consignment or used. I was on an Alaskan ranger's website and he went over how many people could not shoot into the kill zone of a moose at 100 yards from a field position, after they zeroed from a bench. I recall it was high, 40-46%. And the most commonly carried cartridge was the '06.

The 7mag is still a great caliber. It's still the smallest caliber that most experienced people AGREE is sufficient, not marginal for elk. It and the 06 are great all around calibers. ALL things considered, those two are probably the most versatile rounds going.

I don't believe the 7 Mag. is being abandoned "en masse" by the shooters of America. It is still pretty high up on the list of numbers of reloading die sets sold each year.....

Here in the corn belt, several good condition 7 mm Rem Mags coming back, also 300 Win Mags. But I don't know if the previous owner just wanted to go to a hotter model, or got into more muzzle blast or recoil than he liked. I rarely see a 270 Win or a 25 06 come back. Sporting goods stores are pushing the WSM's , WSSM's, and I spot an occasional 416 Rigby and 458 for new sales. Heh, heh, I always admired the 416 Rigby but at $6 per round, I will keep admiring. Scheels has a Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby & it keeps calling out "Biscuit, Biscuit..."

Hahaha, hey man, that is a VERY expensive Persian Carpet!! They are all hand-made and they are expensive as I said, go look on Ebay for some prices of Persian carpets...you'll see.

I was trying to make it look "natural", by having some kind of camo-pattern in the background, representing the woods :D
