7mm Rem Mag. Out of favor?

What are all the 7mm rem mag. shooters going to?
Don't know if others have noticed what I have locally (WV,MD,VA), but ~70% of the nice used rifles I have seen for sale lately have been 7mm mags.
I was never a huge fan and have never owned one. Didn't see enough performance advantage over .270 and 3006 to justify the cost of(ammo, recoil, and weight).
But what are these people switching to? The WSM or less recoil?

In PA, I rarely find many nice, used 7mm mags. I've been looking for one for about 3 months.

I don't think many new ones will be sold from here on..I went to BAsspro yesterday and the most available ammo on their rack was 30-06,270win 300 win 270wsm 300 wsm everything else was in short supply..They pretty much had all Browning,Ruger,Winchester and SAvage WSM's for sale behind the counter

I live in one of the few remaining rifle counties in MD, I just don't see a need for a 7mm Mag in this region. I also hunt northern WV and have used a .270 Win for years, that is more than enough in my opinion. Maybe considering the population growth in this area there are folks moving here from other regions that would justify a 7mm Mag, once they get here and see it is either not allowed or required they trade them in. Just a guess. . . . ?

Like all calibres, it was the one to get way back when. That's why the gun mfg. keep coming out with new products for us to keep buying, and keep them in business.

RE: 7mm Rem Mag. Out of favor?

I asked the folks at a gun shop what their most popular caliber was (sales) = 270WSM for the last 2 years. However, I saw a chart of most popular calibers (Nationwide) and they were as follows:
1. 30-06
2. 270 Win
3. 300 Win Mag
4. 7mmRem Mag
5. 243 Win

My guess it will take YEARS for the WSM calibers to catch up, and who knows if they even will?
BOTTOM LINE - If you have one of the top 4, you can hunt almost anything on our continent. The once - world record Polar Bear was taken with a 270 win and 150gr Core Lokt.

I live in MD also, and I have to admit I LOVE both of my 7mm Rem mags, but I have to agree with USMC, when I enter the woods in late Nov. I am usually carrying my 25-06, around here with most deer being in the 100-150 lb range and shots no more than 100 yards, I find the smaller calibers are more than enough. The reason I switched was 3 years ago I shot a 6 pt at 70 yards with a 140 gr Nosler partiton and it just penciled him, tracked him for 200+ yrds, so I switched to ballistic tips, and found that I was blowing the HE$$ out of deer (i.e losing both shoulders and major trauma almost halfway back throught the rib cage.) My 117 gr Sierra gamekings dont do nearly the damage. BUT, I WILL NOT TRADE MY 7MM'S IN!!! My grandfather used to say "Guns are meant to be bought not sold".......alot of truth in that!!

In most parts of the lower 48 this is true, but what a 7 mag can and "does" do over a 270 Win. is push heavy bullets fairly fast for flat shooting and deep penetration!!! When it comes to bigger animials, the 175 NP out of a 7 mag is hard to beat, especially when your trying to break heavy bones!!!

This is one reason i never liked a 270 win.. I always wanted more penetration than it was giveing on bigger game animials. The 280 Rem, and 7 mag just do this so much better!!

When i was big time into designing and testing bullets, the 7mm Nosler partition would pretty much out penetrate any other expanding bullet of the time!!

I'm "not" into magnums like i use to be, but if i was, a 7 mag would be one of my first choises. I use to hunt with one a lot, and took several animials with one includeing a nice Dall sheep in the Brooks Range of Alaska.

I have noticed in our area as well that the gun shops are flooded with used 7mm Remington mags. I think the short mags are taking a toll on all of the long Magnums. People tend to like the effiecency of the short mags over the longer version. I never was a fan of the 7 Mag even though I owned four or five over the years. I prefer the 280 over the 7 Mag as there is very little real difference in the performance yet considerable less blast and recoil with the 280. Blast and recoil that I have no need for.

I love my 7mm and plan on using it for years. I havent seen many for sale around here. If i ever did sell it and buy a new rifle it would probably be a short magnum.

The 7mmremmag is still one of the most popular cartridges and is still a strong seller in my hunting area.

I like the STW myself. Thats my first choice for 7mm magnums. I don't really think the 7mm Rem Mag is loosing anymore steam than the 300win mag. I see that the WSM sales are up very well. Common sense would tell ya that its taking a toll on the traditionals. I am starting to see alot of new hunters with the WSM's which really surprises me. I know I couldn't handle a cartridge like that when I was 14 or so.

The 7mm-08 is really on a rise I believe. Ammo for mine used to be fairly difficult to find. But now days, see more and more of it. Besides a 308, its the perfect deer gun.

RE: 7mm Rem Mag. Out of favor?

I recently purchased a 270 WSM which almost perfectly matches the 7mm Mag. It may just be me but the recoil seems much lower with the WSM and it is in a lighter rifle. I still would not sell the 7mm I own even though I haven't fired it in over 4 years and may never again. Hang on to your rifles gents, we may live to see a day where you can not purchase a replacement. I hunt mostly farm land with hedge rows between fields in MD, I have a use for a rifle over a shotgun as I can see and fire well beyond 200 yards but still find that the smaller calibers are the most efficient. I eat what I shoot, as long as I hit them in the bread box I waste almost no meat. If I do go in the woods here, which are thick with brush, I use the good old 30-30, no need for more when I know I can not shoot over 70 yards effectively.

RE: 7mm Rem Mag. Out of favor?

I for one am a big fan of the 7mm Rem Mag. If I had to go to owning one rifle, it'd be my 7 mag. I can load down for deer or up for elk or bear. Besides the 7mm bullet being one of, if not the ballistically best bullets out there, my 700 AS is very pleasant to shoot. Is it my first choice out of the safe for deer? No, I'll grab the 7-08 or 243 for where I normally hunt. But if there's a chance I might need to take a long shot across a corn field and still anchor a deer, the 7 mag goes with me. The 7mm RM has been around a long time, and I really don't think the new short mags are going to replace it anytime soon.

RE: 7mm Rem Mag. Out of favor?

I purchased one 2.5 years ago for my first elk hunt and I love it. It shoots straight, flat and fast. Trophy bonded shells in 175g do a number on those big animals and the 150g balistic tip or nosler partitions work well on deer.

Additionally, 7mm seem to be holding their value in my neck of the woods.

I'm in gunshops a lot and lately I have noticed very few 7rem mags or 06's for that matter..shortmags and 308 and 223's ,17 HMR and 22 mags seem to dominate.

I bought this 1999 Ruger 77 MKII chambered in the 7mm Rem. Mag. I absolutely love it! As they say, it's a man's gun! It was worth the money and I plan on keeping it for a loooong time. I bought it last year and it has been used for 1 season so far and I can't wait to use it again this season. I used to shoot my father's Remington 742 semi-auto before I bought my own and it was chambered in the 30.06 caliber.

Slapped a 3-9*50mm scope on it and reduced trigger pull to about 3lbs= perfect gun!

I have used just about all of them at one time or another .I still like my 7mm RM .If I had to go with another I would probally go with the 7 mm STW next time.I just have that " need for speed".;):D I usually shoot the 140 Nosler Ballistic Tip,But am thinking about going back with the hornady 139 grain Boattail Spire Point I NEVER had bad performance with this bullet I guess I was like everybody else and got sucked in to the ballistic tip hype.Don't get me wrong I have had great success with them But they do pretty serious damage. It is pretty much fun to load some 115 grain hollow points and punch paper with the 7. Milk jugs do good also.....Hmmmm  I wonder how the 115 would do on a whitetail? I expect it would zing his butt pretty good.:D

I think if you look hard enough sales of "traditional" cartridges are suffering from the short mag fad. I was in Bass Pro the other day and about all they had on the racks were some sort of short mag. I am sure whenever the shiny marketing bullcrap wears off the 7mm Rem Mag, 270 Win and 30-06 will still be on top of ammo and reloading sales.

RE: 7mm Rem Mag. Out of favor?

I frequently use a 7mm magnum, but in built up areas I find it too noisy. My friends use a variety of familiar calibers on whitetails, mulies, moose - and I have never seen an animal killed with one of the .270-.280-.30 bolt action calibers that would not have been just as dead if shot by another. But then again, no one I know shoots extreme ranges and they usually will pass up shots at game running from them. Some people who pay lots of money for short guided hunts don't like coming home empty handed and may take marginal shots - they think they need the extra bit a big magnum can provide, I suppose.

Someday the dust will settle and we'll see these new calibers coming in on consignment or used. I was on an Alaskan ranger's website and he went over how many people could not shoot into the kill zone of a moose at 100 yards from a field position, after they zeroed from a bench. I recall it was high, 40-46%. And the most commonly carried cartridge was the '06.

The 7mag is still a great caliber. It's still the smallest caliber that most experienced people AGREE is sufficient, not marginal for elk. It and the 06 are great all around calibers. ALL things considered, those two are probably the most versatile rounds going.

I don't believe the 7 Mag. is being abandoned "en masse" by the shooters of America. It is still pretty high up on the list of numbers of reloading die sets sold each year.....

Here in the corn belt, several good condition 7 mm Rem Mags coming back, also 300 Win Mags. But I don't know if the previous owner just wanted to go to a hotter model, or got into more muzzle blast or recoil than he liked. I rarely see a 270 Win or a 25 06 come back. Sporting goods stores are pushing the WSM's , WSSM's, and I spot an occasional 416 Rigby and 458 for new sales. Heh, heh, I always admired the 416 Rigby but at $6 per round, I will keep admiring. Scheels has a Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby & it keeps calling out "Biscuit, Biscuit..."

Hahaha, hey man, that is a VERY expensive Persian Carpet!! They are all hand-made and they are expensive as I said, go look on Ebay for some prices of Persian carpets...you'll see.

I was trying to make it look "natural", by having some kind of camo-pattern in the background, representing the woods :D
