My vote is for the RUM. Ballistics are close enough between the Wby and RUM to make it a wash. Weatherby's just cost a whole bunch more and I think Remingtons a better action/rifle. IMHO

high power hit it on the nail. stubblejumper - I wasnt saying there wasn't a difference, just that to get that tiny velocity jump you really have to pour the powder to it and the more you push it the less efficient the powder will burn. In the end lots more powder very little velocity gain. Factory ammo on weatherby & RUM are expensive.

Bigbulls gave you the scoop. He is right. Not enough info from you. If you want to shoot Elk at normal distance’s (muzzle to 300 yards then a 30-06 would do just fine) any thing over this and one should try the lost art of stalking. Be that as it may, may hunters want to shoot farther, and that is when the 300 magnums come in. The 300 Winchester is the most available over the counter round of the list you picked. It has a well deserved reputation as a fine Elk rifle. Reloading components are plentiful as well as rifles. I had a Remington 700 BDL many years ago but sold it for a new 30-06. I now use the 308 Win.

Hope this helps

I own two 300ultramags and have developed loads for one more.I have owned one 300wby and developed loads for one more.On average the 300ultramag will drive a 180gr bullet 100fps faster. If I wanted efficiency I would go for the 308win.If you are considering a 300 magnum with more capacity than the 300wsm or 300win mag you might as well take the extra 100fps that the ultramag offers over the weatherby.I did not consider the 30-378 or warbird because of the price of rifles and brass.

The 300RUM is a good(but expensive) cartride, but isn't all its cracked up to be, and has little power advantage over the 300win, and none over the weatherby(expensive ammo and brass).
Don't agree on that one at all... They are inexpensive to reload for compared to any Weatherby and are a bit faster. There is no comparable 30 caliber in their price point period. What interests me is they seem to be extremely accurate cartridges. I have seen some groups at 300 yards with RUM's that some rifle/cartridge combos would be hard pressed to match at 100 yards.

I can reach speeds of 3400fps with 180gr bullets with no pressure signs with RL25 in my 300RUM. I have never been able to do that with my weatherby.

I hand load my 300win w/ 180grs and crony 3200ft/sec. Had some hotter, but signs of preasure talked me out of it. I'm sure you can do better w/ the RUM, but not much. To get a distinct advantage you would have to go w/ the 30-378. the ultra is the top of the batch(WIN.,WEATH.,RUM.)but it is definately still in the same class. The RUM does have a clear glamour factor going for it and ALL 300mag hit hard. My only point was that the writers all said it was right on the heels of the 30-378 and not close at all to the win and weatherby, which isnt the case.

The 300 ultramag is a good 100fps faster than the 300wby but a good 100fps slower than the 30-378.It is just as close to the 30-378 as it is to the 300wby.

Is that what you find with your RUM and 30-378? Whats your data for both rounds you and worked up?
