Looking for a new magnum to put in the safe. I am having trouble making the final choice. These are all "mid-bore" magnums if you will. Just looking for a good preformer on the lighter side of the "Big-bores", something smaller than a 416-Rigby.
The intended use of this rifle is Elk, Moose & Black bears. I already know I do not need a rifle this large to hunt these critters with.
If it helps the largest magnum I have in my safe is a 300-Winchester magnum. Just looking to step up.[8D]
I am leaning towards the 375-RUM.?

Either the 338 or the 340 would be a great choice if you had to shoot longer ranges. They fly pretty flat for a big dia bullet. Their power is not much less than that of the 375rum. All they would be good choices for heavy or dangerous game. Bullet choice are leaning towards the 338. Only using it for close shots I think the 375 would have that extra thump.

I am a huge fan of the 340 wby. I've shot a number of different mark V varietys and all were 1/2" to 3/4" shooters with factory ammo. Weatherby ammo is unusual in my experience in that it nearly always chronographs at advertised velocities. While the 338RUM clearly has case capacity advantage, in factory ammo, the loads I have seen chronographed were within 50 fps of weatherby factory ammo--not much of a difference. If weatherby rifles fit you well, I would strongly encourage you consider that route. I too have contemplated adding a 375RUM to the safe. The problem I have is here in North America, I don't know what it could do that a 340 with 250grain bullets at nearly 3000fps couldn't do better. While it does have the ability to shoot commonly available heavier bullets, I thing the greater sectional density of the 250 grain .338 bullets at higher velocity will always out pentetrate the 375RUM while doing so with a much flatter trajectory. In addition, 210 partitions at 3250 fps make one hell of a long range elk/moose/caribou and black bear load--they've also worked suberbly on anterlope and whitetails (although clearly overkill). I've come to the personal conclusion that the 340wby may be the perfect all around rifle for North American big game.

If you're looking for something more than a 300 mag class, go for the old standy by the 375H&H and if you want a 40 go to the 404 jefferies or 458win mag.
All of the above, to me at least ,are pleasant to shoot as far as magnums go. I can't say about the RUM's but I've shot 338's ,340Wthby,416 Rem and 460 wthby and found the older rounds nicer to shoot.
