Remington 510 Magnum conversion?
I have an old remington 510 Targetmaster .22LR, and I was wondering if I could convert it to 22 magnum. It is a bolt action single shot rifle, and a 22 mag fits in the action. However, since the shell is slightly larger, it doesnt fit in the breech. Would it be possible to drill or bore out the breech, about 1" in, to accept the slightly larger shell? The bore would still stay the same diameter, only the breech would enlarge. Anyone ever heard of anything like this?

ASSUMING you was able to rechamber the gun and
ASSUMING the action was adequately strong then
I'd bet the firing pin wouldn't hit the rim of the case and the extractor wouldn't work.....
I think there's a lot more to this job. Buy a new one instead.

Well, its not a semi auto, so the action doesnt move upon firing - its locked in place. I would think its strong enough to take the impact of a 22 magnum. Also, the firing pin should still hit the rim on the shell. the 22 mag is only hairs bigger, which isnt enough of a difference on a rimfire cartridge. You would see that much of a difference in firing pin location just between different gun models. The main thing I'm unsure of is how to actually bore out the breech. I doubt I could do it at home, and I don't know if a gunsmith could. Also, it would need to taper back down to .22 caliber wouldnt it? So that theres no 'step' inside the barrel where the shell meets the bullet.

The REAL problem in this conversion for in MY mind is, the 22lr and the 22wrm do NOT share the same bore diameter!!! 22lr is .222, and the mag is .224. I'm not saying it wouldn't shoot, i'm saying at the cost of a decent 22 mag, why would you want to convert a 22 and end up with something that won't be it's best???
