That was it!! There was a little counter on the side, it was in .300 Savage for $499, not sure what year, good price??
ORIGINAL: 338
They load through the top and have a rotary mag .. Like the rugar 10/22 or the hornet.. The older more desirable models have a brass counter on the side to let you know how many shells are in the mag ..So no thay don't have a clip ...Bill

Camp, I just started looking at the 99's, so my info is limited. The prices I have seen on Gunsamerica.com are anywhere from 300.00 and up over 1000.00!
There are many variations, so there will be big price differences, so be careful!

I have the savage 99 in 303 cal. had it for about 50 years now, first gun i bought as a kid. ammo is a little expensive for it right now, but i reload and have the dies. probably shoots about the same as a 30-30 but i have not shot it in years, stock is a little too short for me.

Keep your eyes out for one of the take-down models. Believe it or not, some of the current owners of these take-down models don't even know that they are in possession of a gun that breaks down. Just look for a small metal "switch" that looks like a shotgun tang safety on the underside of the fore-stock. If you see something that looks like this under the fore-stock it IS a take-down model. I will grant you that 80-90% of Model 99 owners that are in possession of a take-down model know it......but I truly believe that there is a measurable # of 99 take-down owners that don't know what they have. I'm not suggesting you try to terribly screw someone.....I'm only suggesting you keep your eyes open for good deals. There was even a very limited # of take-down models that came from the factory with a presentation case and 2 fitted barrels.........mostly the 250-300 and a 410 barrel........I'd give a pretty penny for one of those packages......

My local shop had about 6 of them in a few months ago, and I looked but didn't buy. Now I wish I had. I have seen the .300sav ammo at several area stores (gander mountain, and smaller gun shops). I wouldn't worry about the ammo too much, you can always order it if you can't find it locally.

My 99 is a take down, I think the designation is 99G. It only came with the 250-3000 barrel, never seen one in .410. I had a gunsmith tighten up the barrell on mine, there was a little slop in it. What the gunsmith figured is the person that owned it before must have taken it down a lot. The gun, other than that, is in mint condition.
