RE: Winchester model 100 (308)
I have never owned a model 100 but have always thought that one in .308 or .284 with a low power variable scope would be about the ultimate all-around rifle for deer sized game in bush and forest. Not so bad for elk or moose in the same close, tight conditions. 2" to 3" groups at 100 yards could be very accetable shooting. The important factor would be your ability to get the gun on your sholder FAST and lay a shot into a pie plate FAST while standing on you hind legs. Shooting woodchucks at 300 yards requires tack driving accurecy. Hunting white-tails in the woods requires "quick-accuracy". That is one of the reasons the 30/30 lever gun is so popular.
Jack O'Connor wrote that the Savage 99 in .300 savage with a peer or a low power scope was about the best "bush deer" gun he'd seen. Win. 88 or 100, just about the same thing.
