You are talking about "SOFT AIR" guns, right? These are not to be confused with the high power air guns that is the new fad for hunting now days.
Soft Air guns are very weak air guns that fire those blasted little yellow bb's you see in sporting good stores. Most bows shoot faster than these do. In my opinion, they are very dangerous for kids. It's easy to get into a "combat" scenerio with friends and there goes the eyes if not protected. Plus, they bounce back at ya if you hit something solid.
Most are single pump type pistols, rifles, and shotgun type actions, but you can get battery powered full auto versions. They run anywhere from 10.95 to 29.95 depending on what you get. The pump riot shotgun is kind of cool though. They will leave marks on the body if you're hit with them inside 10 yards or so.
Basically, they are toys.

I have one of the soft air pistols. Its the beretta 92 replica, I bough tit so that I could practice drawing and firing in my basement. Its a pretty decent replica, it even has a lead weight in it to give it the heft of the real thing, though it balances differently.
The plastic bb's it shoots could easily take an eye out or break your skin at a close distance- it will shoot through corrugated cardboard at a foot from the muzzle.
Its not very accurate- I can hit a 4" target at about 15 feet every time, but pellets tend to have a banana shaped trajectory in any direction shortly after that.
The one I have was cheap, its a fun distraction, but I understand that the high end stuff is much better- battery operated assault rifles that fire in full auto- that cost more than your typical hunting rifle though
IMHO definately not a kids toy.

i use soft air all the time
we ware protective goggles and we shoot each other
when u are waring a coat u can barely feel it
I kind of agree with u briman they can be for kids if they know how to use them properly and they know not to shoot when someones mask is up
but if they don't know how to use them they can take out an eye
just my 2 cents
