I think if you practice, practice,practice use good bullets and shot placement and ranges under 150 yds your 30/30 will do well for deer and elk.

The .30-30 is an awesome "little" gun for whitetail. I've taken a few out to about 75 yards w/ my model 94. It's my #1 go to rifle when I'm hunting thick brush. Elk may be a little big for this cartridge.

Many good hunters have taken all North American Big Game with the 30-30. It can still be done. There are rifles more suitable for Elk but many more will be taken with the 30-30. If you respect its limitations as with any other gun, it will do the job. The same Game was taken with the 44-40 and other old Winchester rifles. Many were the Magnums of their time. Regardless of popular positions, the game animals are no thougher than they ever were.

Go to the Marlin Message Board and I think your answers will be much different. I would go to the 336 message board, the guys on there are diehards. I don't think many of us take out the lever action each year, but maybe thats just my .02
