270 for whitetails
Considering a new deer gun...have been checking ballistics and ammo prices....which brings me to the 270. Looks like a gun that I could shoot accerately out to 300 yds and that's affordable to shoot often. I've never heard anything negative.....so I'm bringing the question to you folks. What about the 270 for a deer cartridge? Ammo preferances....was thinking about the corelocks? Lastly was thinking about buying a contender......your thoughts?
Thanks to all. |
RE: 270 for whitetails
My father-in-law has a .270 win. that he uses for hunting. IT used to be mine, but he had a .308 that I liked and had been wanting a .308 so we traded. This year he made the longest shot he has taken at a whitetail. He made a one shot kill at 350 yards. He shot from one ridge across the valley to another ridge. He held the crosshairs dead on.(no compensation or holding high) At the crack of the rifle the deer hit the ground. It was a 10 point with a 22 inch inside spread. It weighed 245 lbs. He was using a reload with a Hornady regular spire point bullet in 150 grains. I would say that the .270 win. is a great deer cartridge and one you would feel confident with. Good Luck.

The 270 winchester is an excellent choice for deer thumping. Cant comment on the contender, never shot one. Id shoot difrent factory ammo rated for deer until i find hte one that shoots best in the contender. I shoot 130gr bst's in my 270wsm. Recoil with the 270 is very managable.

350 yards is a long shot. I have custom loads that I shoot as well however at 300 yards I have a 12 inch drop and my gun is sighted in three inches high.

You'll never regret getting a .270 Win. for deer shooting. They are great at any range within reason, from the muzzle on out![&:]

The .270 is a very fine deer hunting round.....get one in a M-70 Winchester and you have the best gun of a lifetime.

RE: 270 for whitetails
Last month in Rifle shooting magazine, Craig Boddington said that in his opinion the 270 is the most perfect deer rifle ever developed. Some will argue this because everyone has their opinion but I for one could not take issue with that opinion and you will find that most on this board tend to agree as well. Go for it. You just flat could not go wrong with the 270. It is at least one of the best deer guns going. It shoots flat, hits hard and has pretty mild recoil for the pop it has. Look no further than which ever 130 grain bullet shoot best in your choice of guns. To me it would be the 700 Remington unless I found another good brand with a 26 inch barrel as I strongly prefer at least a 26 inch barrel. That is however just a matter of preference I like to get all the performance I can from my handloads. I have a 280 Rem with the 26 inch barrel that really shoots.

RE: 270 for whitetails
The 270 Win is in the "almost perfect" category of deer cartridges. I shoot a Ruger 77 Mk II and it will take a deer out as I care to shoot.

RE: 270 for whitetails
frizz you said almost. I know know why, cause a 308Win is the "ideal" deer cart. He He. But I agree the 270 is almost.
